Whitaker Publishing is headquartered in Springfield, the third-largest city of Missouri, metro pop. 360,800. Springfield is the hub of Missouri’s fastest-growing region, with a diverse, entrepreneurial economy with many small businesses. The city is home to about seven colleges and universities, among them Missouri State University’s flagship campus. There is a culture-packed downtown, but it’s also an easy drive for outdoor activities such as canoeing, boating, hiking, fishing, as well as sampling Missouri wineries. Our cost of living is low, but our quality of life is high. Springfield is not far from Kansas City, St. Louis, Columbia, Branson and destinations in northwestern Arkansas. The Springfield-Branson National Airport connects the region to many major U.S. cities, and a Branson airport is in development that will do the same in years to come.

Assistant Editor: 417 Magazine is seeking an assistant editor to join our award-winning crew of editors and art directors here at southwestern Missouri’s regional magazine. The assistant editor writes and edits monthly features and departments, both for the printed page and online. The job requires a complete mastery of meeting deadline, as well as the ability to make a strong contribution to content-brainstorming sessions. The assistant editor knows service journalism inside and out and has the ability to understand and practice in-depth reporting and literary storytelling when working on narrative features, profiles or reviews. A flair for multimedia content, visuals and design concepts is a plus.

For the right candidate, this job is a fast track to a high level of responsibility. The successful candidate has a journalism degree and two years of experience writing or editing copy that pops. Experience in consumer lifestyle magazines is desirable, though newspaper feature writers who can write in a magazine style are welcome to apply. We are also interested in recent graduates who were the stars of their journalism schools.

Art Internships: Now accepting applications for Spring 2008, Summer 2008
Whitaker Publishing, the home of award-winning 417 Magazine, as well as GO Magazine, 417 Bride, 417 Home and 417 Encore is offering art internships for university course credit. These positions are reserved only for students and recent grads who are creative, motivated and truly interested in learning more about the magazine industry. Art interns assist the art director in design and layout of the magazine by scheduling photo shoots, attending photo shoots, collecting art, as well as taking People Pics and other photography assignments for short articles. Experience designing for print—whether it is gained from a previous internship or college publication—is a must. We are seeking candidates available 20 to 35 hours per week. No phone calls, please.
