Tara Hamilton

31; Creative Director, Buyer and Head Stylist for STAXX

If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

Isabel Marant. I love that she has a minimalistic approach, which covers the more classic and laid-back side of my style. Then, she adds a boho and edgy aspect to her designs that make them very adventurous. It always keeps me interested.

What three words define your personal style?

Classic, unexpected, evolving

Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing...”

I can’t finish that sentence. I am always up for trying something new.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

All of it! I love that anything goes. All widths of pants, various lengths of blouses, so many heights and widths of shoes, and different shapes and sizes of rings and necklaces have come into play. So many different decades have been incorporated into fashion this year, and it’s influenced by menswear and womenswear. I love that you can literally choose what makes you comfortable and run with it. It’s a win-win.

What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?

Actually, I couldn’t sleep last week, and I ended up getting out my iPad and searching for this Parker beaded jacket I had always wanted. I won it on eBay for well below what it was at cost, and it should be arriving any day now.

What’s your signature piece?

I’m drawn to oversized accessories: watches, rings, necklaces, sunnies and bags. I’m also a huge, huge fan of anything leather or fur.

Where do you find fashion inspiration?

In everything I do. Travel, art, movies, interior décor, et cetera. It’s sometimes the simplest things that inspire me the most.

Who are your fashion role models?

My mother, first and foremost. She always made fashion seem so exciting and was my biggest style influence ever since I can remember. These ladies are also my muses: Iris Apfel, Brigitte Bardot, Princess Diana, Sienna Miller, Kate Hudson and Blake Lively.

How long does it take you to get ready to do out or go to work?

That always depends. It’s my hair that takes time. (Ask my hair stylist, Monica. I’ve got a lot of hair). I would say about 45 minutes, unless I’m wearing my hair down and wavy. That can take a bit. As for makeup, I don’t wear a lot of makeup on a daily basis, and outfits are usually pretty easy for me to put together in the morning.

If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

As for a brand that we carry at Staxx: I would have to say Free People. The brand has evolved enough over time that it has expanded into so many categories to cover anything and everything I would need. Intimates, shoes, activewear and clothing to fit every woman’s personality. Whether I want to get dressed up or keep it casual, I can always find something.

What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?

STAXX has been my favorite since it opened in 2004. I remember going downtown to shop when it first opened and bringing my new clothes back to my dorm room to tell all the other girls about my new favorite store.

What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?

To be honest, if it’s a brand we don’t carry at the store and it’s something I want, I will usually order it from Nordstrom. Zara is my favorite for purchasing something at a reasonable price point that is a current trend that I know won’t make it to Missouri anytime soon. I absolutely love finding independent boutiques or specialty stores when I’m travelling. When Meghan or Abby and I are at market, we absolutely love exploring local shops.

What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?

I had an all-denim outfit (thank you, Justin and Britney) that even had a matching denim handbag. I can’t say that I’m 100 percent ashamed because at the time, it worked. But I don’t think my high school friends agree.

What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a must-have piece of clothing?

No comment. All I will say is that if you absolutely love it, you should buy it.

What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?

Who am I to judge? I don’t look at it that way, as in, a fashion don’t. There isn’t a list of fashion rules. This whole fabulous industry is based on personal style and opinion. Some things that wouldn’t work for me, might work for someone else. You have to take a chance to make an impression and when you are happy with how you are dressed, that’s all that matters.

Do you shop at thrift stores? If so, what do you look for?

Absolutely. I love finding vintage furs, leather boots and jackets, fun hats, clutches, sunnies and statement jewelry. I used to do it a lot more often than I do now. I’ll have to get back into that! It’s so fun wearing them out and wondering where they were in their previous lives.

What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?

I am absolutely in love with this silk peacock-printed cardigan. It was the Jasmine Cardigan by Winter Kate, Nicole Richie’s line. My great-grandmother’s maiden name was Peacock and I have always been fascinated with them. The cardigan makes me happy everytime I see it hanging in the closet.

What fashion trend do you wish would go away?

Even though I have the “to each their own” mentality at the end of the day. There are some trends that are well overplayed, in my opinion. If I absolutely had to say one thing that I wish people would take a break from it would be the “slouchy tee” or “piko tee.” Springfield cannot get enough of them. Staxx picked them up about five or six years ago when we were still downtown. The style of the tee is fabulous and due to requests, we still carry them from time to time. I just personally believe that if you show up to an event and six other women are wearing the same thing, you should maybe branch out and try another style.
