Floating Laughs

White River Comedy Club combines big laughs with a Lake Taneycomo boat ride—and it is bringing in some hilarious headliners.

Comedian Bruce Baum takes the stage at White River Comedy Club in Branson.

Across the plank, above Denny’s Harley-Davidson store and next to Shorty Small’s on Branson Landing floats The White River Comedy Club. Brainchild of California native and comedian Shane Smith, the club is akin to the Hollywood Improv putting down roots in 417-land.

The 178-seat venue is a floating comedy club that’s creating quite a buzz in the comedy community. With his club open since April, Shane has booked some of the best talent among comedy circuit headliners. Shane describes the performers as edgy, but
not raunchy.

Bret Ernst, part of Vince Vaughn’s Outlaws of Comedy Tour, was the opening act and has already been back. “I probably would have never gone to Branson,” Bret says. “I’d heard that it was like Vegas meets Nashville in the Bible Belt. But I enjoyed myself and I’m already booked for a third time. Playing Branson is becoming known as a ‘good gig.’”

“I didn’t know what to expect,” says Tammy Pescatelli, currently ranked the No. 1 female comedienne in Comedy Central’s 2009 Stand-Up Showdown. “I knew Branson was a vacation destination, but it’s an anomaly,” she adds. “It was amazing, and the club is a bonus for Branson.”

“Pauly Shore called the other day,” Shane says, excited. “He’d heard about the club and wanted to know when I could get him in.”

Shane, who began doing comedy in college, visited his in-laws in Branson and felt that the Landing was the perfect location. “I knew there were people who would enjoy seeing great comedy in a high-class environment.”

“I’m fortunate that this industry is like a fraternity and I know some highly talented, smart, funny people who will probably become tomorrow’s big name stars,” he says. And he is one of the few former performer/club owners. He has an advantage in knowing the expectations of performers and how to treat them, which is probably why some of the same acts that perform at the Hollywood Improv, Laugh Factory and Comedy Store want to come and perform at the White River Comedy Club.

The primarily R-rated acts run Wednesday through Sunday and change weekly. Each show features three different performers with Shane as the MC.
