5 Best Late Night Eats

One way to secure a location on 417-land’s gastronomic map: dish out scrumptious late-night eats. From hot dogs, burgers, pizza and desserts, we’ve scrounged up a litany of late night eateries that offer delicious fourth meal options.

1. City Dogs
Downtown Springfield, 417-844-5618

Why We Love It: Whether you’re wandering around Springfield’s First Friday Art Walk or winding down from a long Saturday night of hoopla, this hot dog stand is always a welcome sight. While they’re light on your wallet, these dogs come with a wide selection of toppings from the classic ketchup and mustard to the more vivacious sauerkraut, jalapeños, chili and more. If you’re craving a City Dog mid-week, Wednesday night usually puts the stand in front of Ernie Biggs Dueling Piano Bar.

Don’t Miss This Dish: The all-beef kosher frank layered with sauerkraut.

2.  Whistler’s Old Fashioned Hamburgers
208 W. McDaniel St., Springfield, 417-864-5565

Why We Love It: First opened in Carthage in 1853, this hole-in-the-wall hamburger joint stays open until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday and serves up greasy griddle-cooked sliders that can be ordered by the bagful. These little sliders are a late-night staple that puts the traditional hamburger to the test. The Pig & Bull burger is a scrumptious combination of ham and hamburger. And if you’re on a carnivorous kick, try the Farm Burger, a hearty tri-fecta of ham, bacon and hamburger.

Don’t Miss This Dish: Wash it all down with a 16-ounce handmade milk shake in vanilla, chocolate or strawberry.

3. Sam’s Cellar Bar and Oven
101 N. Wood, Neosho, 417-451-3330, samscellar.com.

Why We Love It: Open till 1 a.m. Monday–through Saturday, this shadowy, blue-lit bar is nestled in historic downtown Neosho. While it serves the usual gamut of drinks and specials, this hideaway saloon also dishes out wood-fired pizza, wings and wraps. Saturday night adds live music to the mix of fun.

Don’t Miss This Dish: The Colorado Breakfast Wrap is stuffed with smoked brisket, salsa, onions, green peppers, eggs and a five-cheese blend all wrapped in a flour tortilla.

4. Second Street Coffee
209 A North Second St., Ozark, 417-581-2116, 2ndstreetcoffee.com

Why We Love it: Live music and tasty treats paired with a chill atmosphere make this coffee house the perfect late-night hangout. Even though the kitchen shuts down at 9 p.m., the café serves its scrumptious snacks like coconut crème cake and steamy espresso drinks late into the night. Stop by Friday and Saturday nights when the shop is open until midnight.

Don’t Miss This Dish: Caramel apple cheesecake bars.

5. Bistro Market
401 South Ave., Springfield, 417-869-1840, bistromarket.net

Why We Love It: There’s a lot to love about Bistro Market. This one-stop grocery store, salad bar, gelato shop, coffee house and restaurant is a popular destination spot whether it’s midday or midnight. From 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., the salad bar is transformed into a breakfast bar dishing out eggs, biscuits and gravy, tater tots and more.

Don’t Miss This Dish: Cheesy mashed potatoes.
