Finnegan's Wake's trivia nights are just one of the places to get brainy and have fun with other folks going solo.

You’re single in the city and it’s almost Valentine’s Day. So what? Sobbing into a pint of rocky road ice cream is not a productive way to mark another year of relationship independence. Neither is trolling for a last-minute date at the gym, the post office or on Craigslist. Instead, call up your favorite single friends (or foes) and celebrate camaraderie and freedom from relationship woes. No gift to buy, no fancy dinner… just a fun night out.

Trivia Nights

9 p.m., Wednesdays, Finnegan’s Wake Irish Pub, 305 South Ave., Springfield, 417-869-1500.
9 p.m., Sundays, Patton Alley Pub, 313 S. Patton Ave., Springfield, 417-865-1188, pattonalleypub.com

If you run with a mixed crew of guys and gals, team up for a night of friendly competition. Finnegan’s Wake hosts a Wednesday night trivia contest with $3 domestics and $4 imports, not to mention a highly addictive spinach dip. Teams of five battle it out through a variety of categories, but be sure to bring your fastest drinker: Ties are broken with a chug-off. Sippers won’t stand a chance at winning here. At Patton Alley Pub’s trivia night, winners get to choose goodies from the prize table and walk way with bragging rights.

Working Women’s Wednesdays

4–9 p.m., Wednesdays at Valentine’s, 2902 S. Campbell Ave., Springfield, 417-891-9700, valentinesrestaurant.com

What’s in a name? Well, if it’s Valentine’s restaurant, it is the place where all the single girls hang out on Wednesdays for gossip and unadulterated boy-bashing. Join STAR 105.1 and enjoy $1 off martinis and half-off appetizers. Forget muffin-top potential: the bruschetta con formaggio is worth every gooey, cheesy bite. If you’re having an extra-tough week and need some TLC, enter to win a chance for VIP treatment all evening long by e-mailing Christine at starwatch@star1051.fm. There’s a chance to win prizes every 20 minutes, too.

Wining Women Wednesday

6 p.m., Vino 100, 2145 W. Republic Rd., Springfield, 417-883-8466, vino100springfield.com

Heal your lonely, broken heart at Vino 100’s Wining for Women tasting event. Did you know that wine has the heart-healthy effect of raising your HDL “good” cholesterol, which puts you at lower risk for heart disease? Held the fourth Wednesday of every month, this women-only affair gives gals a chance to sample four great wines and four tasty appetizers for just $10. Two local vendors provide an opportunity for shopping, too.

Live Drum and DJ Show

9 p.m.–1 a.m., Wednesdays, Tonic Ultralounge, 317 Park Central East, Springfield, 417-863-7575, tonicultralounge.com

Sometimes single guys and single gals just need to get out and dance. Tonic Ultralounge’s new Live Drum and DJ Show is bringing a new concept to the Springfield music scene. Similar to DJ AM and Travis Barker’s work, DJ CEO from Late Night Production takes popular music from the 80s, 90s and today and removes the drum line, which is replaced with a live drummer. Together the two play some of your favorite songs and give you a reason to dance all night long (well, until close). And that’s possible, because the club removes tables to have a larger than usual dance floor during the event.

The Men’s Club at Fedora Social House

3 p.m. to 1 a.m. 300 Park Central East, Springfield, 417-832-9514, fedorasocialhouse.com

If watching AMC’s Mad Men gets you inspired for cocktail culture and a guy’s night out sans the little lady, then the men’s club at the Fedora Social House is for you. This private, members-only locale lures men down the stairs to a dark, refined environment perfect for scotch-drinking, cigar-smoking and cards. If you choose to be a regular, keep your own stash of booze and smokes squirreled away in a private locker.
