Scott & Trish Elam

Told by Scott

I met my lovely bride on a blind date. That’s right. More than 20 years ago, I met Trisha in the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport for our first date. Perhaps I should back up a bit.

I was 22-year-old college student, and I had planned a ski trip over spring break to Winter Park, Colorado with my long-time girlfriend. We broke up before the trip, but I had pre-paid vouchers for everything. I had Delta vouchers for the airfare, car rental, hotel, lift tickets and ski rental. As the break kept creeping up on me, I asked everyone I could think of if they would like to go skiing with me. Guys, of course, would have had to foot the bill, and I offered girls in my classes a no-strings-attached date with a fun guy. One by one, they all turned me down.

Finally, a girl I had met, Cheryl, at a church youth meeting said she’d go. Cool. We went out a couple of times before the trip, and I thought I had it all worked out. Then I got a call from Cheryl who said her mom didn’t think it was a good idea to go on this trip with a guy she’d just met, no matter how nice he was. With only a week to go, I was in a panic on what to do. Cheryl did say she had a good friend who’d probably go. Sweet! Cheryl was right; Trisha said she was up for the adventure when I called. Cheryl would wind up being our maid-of-honor later that year.
