McQueary Home Profile: February 2009

John and Karen McQueary pick the neighborhood before they pick a house. So when they purchased their first fixer-upper in 2005, it simply had to be in the right part of Springfield.

John says the couple had a specific area they were focusing on. And in University Heights, just west of National Avenue, they discovered the perfect flip. “It’s a lot the character of the house, but it’s as much the neighborhood as anything,” Karen says. “What drew us here were the giant maple trees. These four houses here have a row of them that are 50 years old. It is the most beautiful thing in the fall,” Karen says.

But the beauty of the trees is where the aesthetics ended for this do-it-yourself remodel. “The house was in very good shape,” Karen explains. “It had really good bones. But the walls were covered with really loud floral striped wallpaper.”
