C-Street Strolling

A monthly artsy event brings community fun to Commercial Street.

It’s a quiet, yet quirky, little street that’s quickly growing its own fan base. Commercial Street hasn’t exactly enjoyed a stellar reputation, but that’s changing thanks to some bright new businesses and a close-knit group of people coming together every month for the C-Street Stroll.

C-Street Stroll takes place on the first Friday of every month. While it’s similar to First Friday Art Walk, an interactive component makes it a little different. Whether it’s a scavenger hunt or window display contest, activities are designed to get people involved with the art.

“We’re a little bit different on Commercial Street, so we just try to go with that,” says C-Street Stroll coordinator Sa’dia Luallen. At this event, the art is always different. It’s sometimes a little weird, or even irreverent, but it’s always family-friendly. There’s a wide variety of media including sketch, water color, fired pottery, stained glass and even pieces made from unusual items like Post-it notes.

C-Street Stroll has a personal feel. Business owners and artists are often available to meet and answer questions. Many venues serve hors d’oeuvres and drinks, and live music adds to the atmosphere. Several restaurants participate, too. Erik Kincade, owner of Savor and the Loft Martini Lounge, is also an artist and displays personal artwork in his businesses. Big Momma’s Coffee & Espresso Bar is where scavenger hunt forms are turned in, and Sisters in Thyme Bakery sells fired pottery alongside delicious goodies. Drury University is one of the largest participants, and Mosaic Junction is the newest addition with a collector-worthy selection of antiques. Luallen says new artists are always welcome. Those interested can find her or fellow coordinator, Paulette Hughes, at their business, Alchemy…A Salon.

C-Street Stroll is a come-and-go event, but plan to stay at least an hour for the scavenger hunt. Find forms at any participating business (or on the C-Street Facebook page). Answers are found in art pieces. Participants have a chance to win a free prize, which is always a different—but then, so is Commercial Street.
