From House to Home
Joe and Brooke Cinalli transformed a spec home into a warm, well-designed space filled with many personalized touches.

Joe and Brooke Cinalli moved from Kansas City into their Springfield home nearly five years ago. The couple was engaged at the time, and they knew they wanted to raise their future kids in Springfield near Brooke’s parents, so relocating after they were married was a no-brainer. But they did have a bit of a challenge
finding a house.
Brooke made the trip to Springfield to look at homes by herself, and she and Joe bought the house they currently live in without Joe even seeing it. But Joe trusted Brooke, an interior designer and partner of bcDESIGNGROUP, to find the right home. I trusted the vision she had, Joe says.
This vision was important, because the house they purchased wasn’t what they were looking floor. They saw potential in the space and loved the floorplan, but they didn’t love the style. But over the last four years, the two have made many changes to transform the space into an inviting, well-designed home for themselves, 3-year-old Isabel and 16-month-old Seph.
The couple changed out almost all of the lighting in the home, and they did a lot of painting. They added a screened-in porch in the back, and they transformed the breakfast nook into a sitting room. “It was a spec home,” Joe says. “It takes some work to give it some personality. Brooke did a fantastic job of having a vision and sticking to that vision.”

Dining Room
Brooke combined modern and traditional looks in the dining room. The table in the space is more traditional, but she paired it with very modern chairs. Also, the room features an antique buffet Joe found in New York. It sits in front of some modern art.

Sitting Room
The couple transformed the home’s original breakfast nook into a sitting room. “Our original idea was to make it a play space, but we also like to entertain,” Joe says. “Since we’re a small family, we didn’t need another place to eat, so we added a comfortable spot to sit.” The space is given character with a fun black-and-white zig-zag area rug and many colorful throw pillows and accessories. The couch in the room features a pillow with a 3 on it, representative of Joe, who is Joseph Paul Cinalli III. The couple’s son Seph’s full name is Joseph Paul Cinalli IV, and they have a pillow with a 4 on it in the family room.

Isabel’s Room
Brooke and Joe designed Isabel’s room around fun and functionality. Brooke created a safe, aesthetically pleasing piece of art above the bed by painting a plastic ceiling medallion and gluing a small mirror inside it. She hung colorful clipboards by the bed where Isabel can display artwork and special notes. An open-back frame surrounds a chalkboard, and a small table with four antique chairs is a great spot for both having tea parties and doing crafts.

Seph’s Room
Seph’s room was originally an office, but Brooke and Joe wanted him to be close to their bedroom, so they transformed the space. The room features what Brooke calls a transportation theme with a New York flair, including fun touches such as a cityscape painted on the wall with chalkboard paint.
