Local Coffee Taste Testing

We know there are a lot of home-run coffee joints in town, but which is the best? We set out to answer this question.

The Coffee Ethic, Hebrews, Dancing Mule - the list goes on. We all know that there is not a shortage of good coffee joints here in the good old town of Springfield, Missouri. But who is the best? We set out to answer this question with a blind taste test of some of the top coffee places around. The subjects in question were Classic Rock Cafe, Dancing Mule, Hebrews coffee, and the Coffee Ethic. To throw in a curve ball, we even included some Kum & Go coffee to see if our testers could guess which cup came from the gas station. We gathered up 5 different French Vanilla Soy Cappuccinos* from all of these locations and put our coffee-loving, truth-telling tasters to the test to see which place makes the best French Vanilla Soy Cappuccinos. So here are the results**! What do you all think?

* Coffee sizes vary, as does concentration of coffee (which effects flavor).
**Comments are not a ranking of coffee houses, only one winner has been selected.

The Coffee Ethic

Comments:
Katie - "Tastes like….good. More espressoy than vanillay." (After the fact, she said that it was the only one with a good espresso, and a slight vanilla taste).
JuliRose - "Smells like coffee, and you can hardly taste the vanilla."
Hope - "Not as sweet as some.."

Overall:
This cup had a strong coffee taste, with less sweetness and only subtle vanilla hints. We liked this.

Hebrews

Comments:
Katie - "Taste more soy-milky…there are chunks in it."
JuliRose - "Smells more vanillay."
Hope - "It looks like it would taste more like coffee, but it doesn't."

Overall:
Tastes more like vanilla, but looks stronger than the first cup. We liked this one, but not as much as the first.

Dancing Mule

Comments:
Katie - "Doesn't have a coffee flavor at all."
JuliRose - "Has a different taste - maybe a different type of soy milk."
Hope - "Tastes more like coffee milk."

Overall:
Very heavy milk taste, with a hint of coffee and probably a different type of soy milk than normal. We decided that if you wanted less of a coffee taste, this would be a good choice.

Classic Rock Cafe

Comments:
Katie - "Weak taste on coffee."

Kum & Go

Comments:
Katie - "Not as thick; doesn't taste like anything. Can't taste any coffee in there."
JuliRose - More watery…"
Hope - "Vanilla water."
Overall:
Very watery and didn't have a strong taste of anything. We were all quite unamused with this one.

Did we guess the gas station coffee?

Yes! Of course, there is no way gas station coffee could stand up to these places!

And the winner is....

The Coffee Ethic
124 Park Central Square
Springfield, MO
417-866-6645

With their stronger coffee taste and subtle hints of vanilla and soymilk, it proves to be the best pick me up around Springfield. Congratulations to all of the hard working people over at the Ethic.
