Fried Pickles

These tangy disks are dangerously delicious.

When you have a craving for some indulgent comfort food or a little Southern cooking, there are few things tastier than a really good fried pickle. We love the fried pickles at Freda’s Uptown Café (210 W. Jackson St., Marshfield, 417-859-7251). They’re offered as a side item along with the obvious choices like French fries or onion rings. They are super-crisp and just a little bit spicy, and they come with thick and creamy ranch dressing for dipping. A little hint: Ask if you can get a little of the restaurant’s other dipping sauce concoction: a delicious mixture of horseradish, mayonnaise and mustard. It’s a fried pickle’s perfect companion.
