Jonnie the Office Dog
Here at 417 Magazine, we have a sweet and charming office dog named Jonnie. He’s a black lab, and he’s a professional beggar. When we’re eating lunch, he parks his cute little booty right beside us, quietly drooling as we feed our bellies. He doesn’t jump. He doesn’t whine. He just waits. And he’s so darn polite that we usually can’t resist giving him the very last bites of whatever we’re eating. A sampling of food we’ve shared with Jonnie recently: turkey, deer jerky, half a bread bowl with the soggy remnants of some chicken soup, the icing from a piece of wedding cake (he ate it off a fork!), a carrot, asparagus, peanut butter, Greek yogurt, barbecue Lay’s potato chips and Twizzlers.
Best Programming You Might Not Be Taking Advantage Of
Springfield–Greene County Library classes
The Springfield–Greene County Library (thelibrary.org) is more than a place to go to check out books. It also offers tons of fun activities for kids all month long at its various branches. And it’s not just storytime. There have been dance parties, Lego builds and science experiments. Last month there was even a snow festival! Teens and adults have options, too, from book discussions to educational opportunities, concerts and more.
Best Service for Foodies
If you consider yourself a locavore with a passion for locally grown and produced food, then you’ll want to sign up for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). You’ll hook up with a 417-land farm, and for a fee they’ll hook you up with weekly boxes of whatever they grow that’s in season. You get to support your neighbor, you’ll know where your food comes from and you will probably try new varieties of veggies. It’s a win-win! To find a CSA, enter your zip code at localharvest.org/csa, or inquire with your favorite vendors at a 417-land farmers’ market.
Best Utilitarian Car Dealership Waiting Room
Our editor recently spent nearly two hours in this waiting room while Youngblood fixed her tire. And unlike during past visits to other car dealership waiting rooms, she was comfortable! The chairs were cozy. There were freshly baked cookies and baskets of healthy snacks. The TV was tuned to some pleasant game shows, the WiFi was free, and the magazines weren’t from 1970! Plus the staff was oh-so-friendly. Not too shabby for being stuck in a waiting room.
Best Swanky Car Dealership waiting Room
Acura of Springfield
Here the waiting area is pretty darn attractive. With a sleek fireplace, warm-colored rugs and paintings on the wall, the lounge here makes you feel like you’re in someone’s living room instead of a car dealership. Plus it’s sort of tucked away in its own space, so you can tune out the business buzz and just hunker down with a book while you wait. Add in the complimentary food and drinks, and you’ve got it made.
Best Liquor Store Service
They have a drive-through. Enough said, right? But even better, they’ll carry your liquor to the car, so you barely even have to lift a finger.
Best Scream-While-You-Sweat Workout
BUTI at Spark Fitness
Our senior editor tries all sorts of workouts thanks to her role as the Get Fit guinea pig. It’s her time at the BUTI class at Spark Fitness (417-929-1351, sparkforfitness.com) that she talks about the most. The instructors were super-energetic, and the class was full of women who were having so much fun that they let out a scream every now and again. It’s the most perfect example of burning calories while having a blast.
