Attorney, Law Offices of Kristoffer Barefield
Born: September 12, 1978
Kristoffer Barefield has been on a defined career path since junior high; his dream of being an attorney began when he read John Grisham’s novel The Firm while in middle school. That led to four years of debate in high school and eventually to law school at Ohio Northern University.
Today, he’s the city prosecutor in Willard (a part-time job) and runs a private practice in Springfield, specializing in family and juvenile cases, the ultra-tough branch of law that deals with child custody, abuse and neglect. Much of Kris’s work is pro bono; he’s a guardian ad litem for children with no representation. There’s plenty of work: Kris doesn’t mind explaining that Greene County has among the highest child abuse rates in the state.
Kris is also a political up-and-comer, serving on the executive committee for the Greene County Democrats (he’s chairman for the party in the 137th district). Unofficially, Kris dabbles in local and state campaigns, and says he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of running for office himself, if ever approached.
In his spare time Kris travels to Georgia—the former Soviet state, not the U.S. one. His family has a long history in missionary and fundraising work in Africa and Asia, and he occasionally visits those sites for ceremonial and oversight purposes.
