We talk to a lot of people, and we’ve yet to speak with anyone who knows Michael Garner and doesn’t use the words “nice” or “involved” to describe him. Yet the baby-faced bank VP—who estimates he’s responsible for $10-$20 million in commercial lending in a given year—doesn’t truly open up until he starts talking about one of the community boards of which he is a member.

Today’s big deal: Springfield’s Partnership for Sustainability. “Green’s the hottest thing going,” he says. “And it’s exciting because the smallest things can make the biggest difference.” He was chosen to participate on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce’s The Network (of which he is vice chairman), and is particularly proud of the city’s decision to place a LEED standard on all new municipal buildings. Need more? Michael is also on the board for Big Brothers Big Sisters, a member of Rotaract, participates in local triathlons and—soon—the Ozarks Adventure Race.

Michael’s innovative thinking and skill with people are the strengths that play into not only his extracurricular activities, but his success in banking. “I love offering a client something they’ve never heard of, something that can add value to their business,” he says.
