Weekend Anchor/Reporter, KSPR

Born: October 13, 1979

When Michelle Sherwood took an anchor’s job at KSPR last fall after four and a half years at KY3, she saw the move to the smaller station as a chance for more opportunity, something she’s no stranger to seizing. The rural Missouri native had journeyed to Lawrence, Kansas, then to Wilmington, North Carolina before arriving back in the Ozarks, where she’s become one of the most recognizable faces on local television. Her most recent endeavor: A “Buff Brides Blog” at KSPR.com, where Michelle, engaged herself, chronicles bride-specific workout classes at the Doling Family Center (which are like regular workouts, but with cake tastings).

“I don’t think I’m a role model,” Michelle says, though she does relish the chance to help adopted children and their families feel more at home in Springfield. Herself an adoptee from Pusan, South Korea, Michelle volunteers for Dillon International, a Tulsa-based adoption agency, as well as the local Adoption For Families. She’ll tell her story—how she found her birth family at the age of 18—and provide advice for local adopting families, sometimes even flying with them to foreign countries to pick up the children.

Michelle remains passionate about reporting, despite her varied duties and recent anchor gig. “I believe in service journalism,” she says. “It’s what keeps me in it.” And when her day job helps adoptive families, all the better: “People come up to me and say ‘we really like watching you because [the child] is so happy to see an Asian face’. Every day I realize this job we have is not about us.”

Office Space

Radiohead

Childhood cartoon character?
Smurfette or Rainbow Brite

Sports team?
Cardinals, by default. My fiance would kill me if it was something else.

Adult beverage?
Cabernet

Local bar AND restaurant?
Bar: Patton Alley Pub, though I go there less now that they charge a cover.
Restaurant: Mijuri
Local Bar/restaurant: Patton Alley Pup

Big-time news anchor?
Jeremy Hubbard. (ABC World News Now). I interned with him when he worked in Kansas City. However, my heart appreciates reporters more—John Larson, Bob Dotson, and Steve Hartman are my faves. When they're on, I stop everything I'm doing and watch.

Word to say on-air?
Now. That word nearly defines television news. We like to report stuff as it's happening NOW... but sometimes, it's also my crutch word. Ex: Now, police arrested the teen for the robbery. (Watch me, I'll nearly always say it at the end of my stories. I try to fight it, but it's so easy to say "NOW"!)

Questions:

What’s the first website you check every day?
kspr.com (seriously), then yahoo.

One night, no consequences, whom do you seduce?
Eeek! backing away!

What’s the best thing about being younger than 30?
I am young enough to still be considered young by the majority of the population... but just old enough to be taken seriously. Plus, now I look older than 20, unless I don't have my make up on.
