Co-owner/Manager, Mitchum Jewelers

Born: June 18, 1982

Think of the stereotypical jeweler, and what comes to mind? Older gentleman, possibly hunched, definitely squinting, possibly gregarious like Woody Justice. No matter what... aged, like the stones he scrutinizes and eventually sells.

No so with Randy Mitchum, the second-generation owner of Ozark’s institutional jewelry shop. Since he was 21, Randy has been flying annually to Antwerp, Belgium, among other places, to hand-pick diamonds for clients and his own display cases. Randy says he’s always among the youngest at conventions, but the players are learning his name.

Though his father, John, is still involved in the business, Randy manages day-to-day operations. In the last year, Randy has overseen Mitchum Jewelers’ move to a sparkling new stand-alone store on Highway 14, as well as a forthright new marketing campaign (“When she’s ready for a name change”) and increased brand awareness that Randy says is due, in part, to his young age—the age when people are getting married, starting families and careers. “And of course the fact that our store has been established since 1965 has made a huge difference,” he says.

A indefatigable networker, Randy is a member of Ozark’s Rotary Club and is never without a business card. He’s also never far from his Harley or, when softball season isn’t in swing, his tae kwon do pads (he’s a third-degree black belt.) Either way, Randy is happy to leave Springfield to the Maxons of the world, and continue to grow the Mitchum name in his home town.
