The Crowd-Pleaser

Bob Nelson, 28

Special Events Coordinator, City of Springfield

Most people who work in the public sector have to be a bit of a diplomat, but Bob Nelson especially; in his job, he answers to two bosses: the city and the Greene County Parks Department. The best part: Bob does it with an infectious smile and his signature “How arrrrre you?” greeting. Bob’s job (Hey, alliteration!) was created nearly four years ago just as Jordan Valley Park opened and Springfield began its most recent spate of urban growth. Since then he’s set himself apart as one of the best event planners in town, with responsibilities including—but not limited to—two Back to School Parties in the Park, movie nights at Founder’s Park, media work for the Springfield Lasers and non-exploding grandstand shows at Firefall. Bob is currently planning the inaugural Taste of Springfield, a food-centric downtown event set for this October. Outside work, Bob is president-elect of Springfield Rotaract and gives time to a number of local civic and marketing groups. Bob says he is proud of his ability to balance the needs and wishes of many people and still plan quality events—and what pleases people more than a good time?

One night, no complications, whom do you seduce? Condi Rice. “It’s a power thing.”
Biggest phobia: Heights. “I don’t mind the Tower Club as long as I’m not close to windows.”
When I’m 40 I hope _____________? “I have a great job and I’m feeling great about where I am in life.”
If you could eat one meal in Springfield, and budget isn’t an obstacle, where would you eat? Haruno
You have an iPod and can only download one album. What is it? “Something from Billy Joel. I didn’t realize how much I liked his music until I saw him live recently.”
In an honest moment, what would you tell someone about your job? “It’s hard to please everyone.”
Who would play you in a movie of your life? “Kevin Bacon. I just found out I’m five degrees! I know someone who is four, so…” (Editor: I guess that makes GO six?)
If you could be on a reality show, what would it be? “Maybe Top Chef? I want to learn how to cook better…I wouldn’t make it very far.”
First website you hit every morning: Probably the Springfield Business Journal’s site.
Biggest phobia: Heights. “I don’t mind the Tower Club as long as I’m not too close to the windows.”
