The Bear Bankroller

Sophie Pierpoint, 28

Assistant Director of Athletic Development, Missouri State University

Sure, John Q. built a stadium and general funds help buy equipment, but it’s Sophie Pierpoint who, along with three marketing, promotion and sales co-workers in a small but busy athletic development office, makes sure Missouri State has the moolah to be a true Division I sportive experience. The office brings in more than a half a million dollars annually in sponsorships, and Sophie is one of the big reasons why. The ex-volleyball player knows she’s fortunate to have turned her hobby into a career. “People are so into athletics,” she says. But fandom only goes so far—Sophie has to find personal connections between sponsor and sport to make people open their checkbooks, which is easier for basketball than, say, softball. Sophie also oversees on-court contests (you’ll spot her with a clipboard during halftime) and helps oversee print projects, fund-raisers and other events. Sophie is a member of Rotaract, volunteers for Big Brothers Big Sisters and spends “down” time playing golf and volleyball, or with her Brittany Spaniel, Allie.
