The Rock Crawler

Derek West, 28

Owner, Crush Motorsports

No one on this year’s 20 Under 30 list is quite as wide-ranging as Derek West. The jack-of-all-trades spends his weeks working for Power Source Solar, a local solar-energy company. But what Derek really does is drive customized Jeeps over rocks—and he’s one of the best in the world at doing it (he’s won $9,000 since the beginning of April.) Currently Derek is the second-ranked driver nationally in his class. Financing for this job—originally all out-of-pocket—comes from big-time sponsors like BF Goodrich; Derek even owns his own team, Crush Motorsports. His goal is to make the world finals in Sydney, Australia in January, but for now he keeps plenty busy with other interests, including Power Source, Elite Floral (he co-owns it with his fiancée, Ashley) and odd jobs for Central Vacuum Systems. Derek is also a past president of the Ozarks Jeep Thing Club, where he masterminded the group’s annual Fall 4xFest charity fund-raiser. With all these hats, Derek finds time to be a dad to four-month-old daughter London, who we hear will be rock-crawling any day now.
