The Young Politico

Derek White, 22

Politician/Volunteer

It’s Election Day 2006. We’re driving eastbound on Battlefield. On the corner of Glenstone is young Derek White, a candidate for Greene County Circuit Clerk, holding up a campaign sign. It was a novice’s energy, we thought at the time; but it turns out that campaign (a loss) wasn’t the first for Derek, one of the most politically ambitious—and experienced—22-year-olds you’ll find in Springfield. Derek has also run for City Council, losing to Denny Whayne in 2005. He stays active where he can, chairing Springfield’s Citizen Advisory Committee for Community Development, which helps allocate money within the city. In 2005, he was named Citizen of the Year by Democrats in the 137th district for his community work. Derek thinks he can one day win a local—or state—election, even in a city wary of candidates below “a certain age” (unless his name is Blunt). His reasons are highly personal. “I grew up in northwest Springfield, and a lot of people feel they can’t better themselves. [This] shows them they don’t have to settle.”

Finish this sentence: When I’m 40 I hope __________? “I’m governor.”
Favorite adult beverage: Red Bull and vodka
If you could eat one meal in Springfield, and budget isn’t an obstacle, where would you eat? “Cashew chicken at either Lucy’s or Chinese Chef.”
You have an iPod. You can only download one album. What is it? Fall Out Boy, Infinity on High
In an honest moment, what would you tell someone about your job? “Just because I’m young doesn’t mean I can’t do things. That annoys me the most.”
Who would play you in a movie of your life? Vince Vaughn
If you could be on a reality show, what would it be? Survivor
First website you hit every morning: espn.com
Biggest phobia: Snakes
One night, no complications, whom do you seduce? My girlfriend

Favorites:

Movie: A Beautiful Mind
Adult beverage: Red Bull and vodka
TV show: Smallville
Fast food indulgence: Chick-Fil-A
Bar: Icon Nightclub

Take your pick:

Time machine or omniscience? Omniscience
Black tie or comfy sweats? Comfy sweats
John or Paul? John
MySpace or Facebook? Quit doing both
Deal or No Deal? No Deal “Just keep going.”
