The Music Career Kick-Starter

Lizzy Bilyeu, 29

Co-owner, head of marketing and booking, MayApple records

Lizzy Bilyeu is one of the driving forces behind Springfield’s burgeoning music scene. In her role with MayApple Records, the label she co-owns with husband and Big Smith frontman Mark Bilyeu, Lizzy constantly pushes the boundaries of popularity for bands on the label. For example, in the last year Big Smith members have played in Colorado, California and Washington. Perhaps more importantly, Lizzy is charged with spreading word of MayApple’s dozen or so lesser-known artists, almost all of whom are recording or promoting first albums. MayApple’s locally heralded stable includes Cindy Woolf and newcomer Noah Earle, a New Folk Finalist at Texas’s big-time Kerrville Folk Festival. In her free time, Lizzy plays on The Outland’s softball team and fixes up the house she and Mark own near Commercial Street—another scene Lizzy says is brimming with possibility. Trust us, she knows one when she sees one.

In an honest moment, what would you tell someone about your job?
“It’s harder to enjoy live music because I have to think of the business side of things.”
Favorite bar: “The Outland and Lindberg’s, once it gets going.”
When I’m 40 I hope _____________? “I have started a family.”
If you could eat one meal in Springfield, and budget isn’t an obstacle, where would you eat? “Gilardi’s. And I’d order blackened sea bass with calamari in saffron cream sauce.”
You have an iPod. You can only download one album. What is it? “I really want the new White Stripes album that’s coming out soon.”
In an honest moment, what would you tell someone about your job? “It’s harder to enjoy live music because I have to think of the business side of things, not just enjoy the creativity in the moment.”
Who would play you in a movie of your life? Lilly Taylor. “Mark loves Lilly Taylor.”
If you could be on a reality show, what would it be? “I hate reality shows. None.”
Prediction for two dead characters in the last Harry Potter book: “Hermione would be pretty tragic. Her and Mr. Weasley.”
First website you hit every morning: MayApple home page
Biggest phobia: “Slicing. Anything that slices.”
One night, no complications, whom do you seduce? “Eric Bana.” (Editor: At this point Lizzy doesn’t answer the next question. “Sorry,” she says. “I was planning what I would do to Eric Bana.”)

Favorites:

Movie: Lord of the Rings series
Adult beverage: “There are many, but probably a Porter or stout beer. I used to love the Little Yeoman brewery before it closed.”
TV show: Lost
Fast food indulgence: Steak ‘n’ Shake’s single steakburger with cheese and French fries and a junior chocolate malt
