All A-Twitter

The online phenomenon Twitter has even 417-land erupting with 140-character updates. Here are a few locals we think you should follow.

If you haven’t noticed, Twitter is all the online rage. It’s a free online service that combines the most narcissistic part of Facebook (status updates) with the information possibilities of blogging. A number of 417-landers—many in the media, many not—have seized on the trend, and we found five of the best, either for the information or humor value of their Tweets. Oh, and for the record, if you’d like to follow me, my Twitter ID is @itsalemmon.

Mike Brothers

Twitter ID: @mikebrothers
Who is he? A current public information specialist for the City of Springfield (and former entertainment writer for the Springfield News-Leader), Brothers’s feed is a mish-mash of personal musings on sports and video games, with some city business thrown in for good measure.
Why you should follow (in 140 characters or fewer): He makes city proceedings interesting to a crowd that usually skips such things. And he’s got great taste in music and a head for politics.
Typical tweet: "Yankees have played a great series. I just don’t really take any pleasure in seeing them win, though. Meh."

Nicole Lierheimer

Twitter ID: @nlierheimer
Who is she? Nicole is a marketing exec for Noble and Associates. She spends much of her time traveling, profiling restaurants, chefs and, yes, tasting dishes for the company’s Food Channel website. It’s a stomach-rumbling read.
Why you should follow in 140 characters or fewer: Salivate over what’s cooking in Vegas.
Typical tweet: Tasting time at Timbers—grilled tilapia blew us all away. You have to try it!

Dan and Nicole Chilton

Twitter IDs: @bjork24 and @nikosaur
Who are they?: Co-owners of Moxie Cinema, the indie movie theater downtown. They tweet about both business and personal stuff, including their new baby.
Why to follow in 140 characters or fewer: The inner workings of a mom-and-pop theater are often fascinating.
Typical tweet:
(Nicole) While kneeling down on the floor putting together a closet organizer, I briefly thought, “I’ll take my belly off to make this easier.”
(Dan) My facebook profile is the #1 google result for “Dan Chilton.” Take that Victoria, British Columbia realtor Dan Chilton!

Dave Snider

Twitter ID: @DaveSnider
Who is he?: KY3’s weekend meteorologist, Ozark family man and nature lover. He’s on it when the weather gets cranky.
Why to follow in 140 characters or fewer: Because it does our hearts good to know when an under-9 soccer team finishes its season undefeated. And when we should duck and cover.
Typical tweet: Great weekend taking shape... put it to good use. Winterize the boat NEXT weekend. #KY3

Springfield Blogs

Twitter ID: @sgfblogs
What is it? This feed is a compilation of dozens of 417-land bloggers, operated by Sarah Jo Austin.
Why to follow in 140 characters or fewer: It’s imperative for your sanity that you get local opinions from somewhere other than the News-Leader’s online comment section.
Typical tweet: New! VIDEO: Roy Blunt on the House floor during health care debate

And 5 Celebrties You'll Enjoy

1. Chad Ochocinco

Athletes love Twitter, and the colorful Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tweets all. the. time. Even on gameday, when he's going through his pre-game McDonald's routine.
Twitter ID: @OGOchoCinco

2. John Mayer

The polarizing crooner (you either love him or despise him) is perhaps the funniest Tweeter out there. Log on late on a weekend night for some random—and often poignant—thoughts.
Twitter ID: @johncmayer

3. Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher

The "first couple" of Twitter, they don't update as often as they used to, but they'll still banter and push their favorite causes and, occasionally, post a photo or two (like last summer's shot of Demi ironing in a bikini that got the tabloids buzzing).
Twitter IDs: @aplusk (Kutcher), @mrskutcher (Moore)

4. Blaine Gabbert

Okay, so he's no Chase Daniel yet, but the Mizzou quarterback is informative without being annoying. Particularly in-season (and leading up to the Tigers' Dec. 31 bowl game) you'll find him worth following.
Twitter ID: @BlaineGabbert

5. Lance Armstrong

We told you athletes love Twitter... but Armstrong's stuff is just as much about cancer awareness and his travels, which are pretty interesting if you like living vicariously through unbelivably fit men who wear yellow a lot.
