Last August, 417 Magazine asked the region’s home cooks to submit their favorite recipe to our first-ever MaMa Jean’s Keep it Clean Recipe Contest. There was one catch: The recipe had to be “clean.”
So, what’s a “clean” recipe? Well, it’s a recipe that contains healthful food that’s as natural as possible. That means lots of fruits and veggies, whole grains and lean protein—all of them free of chemicals, preservatives and highly processed ingredients. Recipes that were submitted with meat had to use free-range meats, nitrate-free pork and hormone- and antibiotic-free chicken and beef. High-fructose corn syrup, MSG, food dyes, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides were all off-limits.
Does that sound limiting? Lots of 417-land cooks didn’t feel constrained at all, and they submitted a wide range of delicious-looking recipes. 417 Magazine narrowed the pool to the top 10 recipes, and then we posted them on 417mag.com, so readers could vote and decide on the three finalists: Connie Rizzo’s quinoa salad (a healthful take on Waldorf salad), 16-year-old Peyson Shield’s Asian-influenced lettuce wraps and Farrah Greene’s hearty-but-healthy woodland cream steak.
Those finalists’ dishes were prepared and served to the lunchtime crowd at MaMa Jean’s Natural Market’s Campbell Avenue store at an event on October 27. That was also the day those three recipes went up for their final judging by 417 Magazine and MaMa Jean’s staff, who tasted each one and carefully deliberated.
And now, we’re excited to announce the big winner and to share the recipes with you. Try them out at home, and start the new year with a healthy take on eating.
