The Perfect Affogato

Yesterday morning started off great. I woke up before my alarm, jumped out of bed and was ready to go a full 15 minutes before I even had to be. I decided to use my new-found time for a little adventure, and I hopped in my car and headed south to Ozark’s Ben’s on the Square (103A W. Church St., Ozark, 417-485-0900) coffee shop. I decided on ordering the affogato, made with premium vanilla ice cream and Ampersand Brick & Mortar Coffee espresso. Affogatos are popping up all over the place now, so I figured I could count this as research (plus, it gave me an excuse to eat ice cream at 8 a.m.). I was soon greeted with an oversized coffee cup containing one of my wildest food fantasies: a generous scoop of Blue Bell vanilla sitting in a velvety pool of just-made espresso and freshly melted ice cream. The first sip was divine, with the bitter espresso giving me the kick I needed to start my day. I followed it up with a bite of ice cream, and it was just what I had hoped—the good stuff that’s speckled with vanilla beans and bursting with flavor. I continued sipping and scooping and scooping and sipping to my heart’s content, slurping up every last ounce in about 5 minutes flat. After scraping my cup so much that I was becoming slightly embarrassed, I talked to owner Billy Grady, and he told me you can also order the affogato with a shot of the spot’s house-crafted cold brew.
