How do you determine which doctor is right for you and your family?
There are a lot of factors to consider, but starting from square one is the toughest place to be (especially if you’re new to town and haven’t caught wind of word-of-mouth information about who’s great and whose bedside manner could use a little help). The purpose of this feature is to give you a jumping-off point as you venture into the wild world of hospitals and health-care research.
Several months ago, we surveyed as many physicians as we could in five 417-land cities: Bolivar, Branson, Joplin, Lebanon and Springfield. We asked them to tell us who they’d recommend to friends and family members who were searching for a doctor in a certain field or specialty. What lies on the following pages are their answers. It’s not the only information about there about who the best doctors are in our region, but it’s a place to start as you work on making the right choices for you and your family.

Top Doc Dr. Darren Lehnert, from St. John’s Clinic—OB/GYN, shares the 10 best tips for a healthy pregnancy.
1. See a doctor. Early prenatal care is an important first step after you’ve become pregnant.
2. Get adequate nutrition. Folic acid is especially important, so make sure to take prenatal vitamins and eat whole grains and dark green veggies.
3. If possible, make sure you’re up-to-date on all your immunizations prior to pregnancy.
4. Check with your doctor to determine if you’re a candidate for moderate exercise.
5. Make sure you are gaining an appropriate amount of weight. Women of normal weight (neither underweight or overweight) should gain between 25 to 35 pounds. Keep in mind that weight gain is dependent on height and body mass index.
6. Ask before taking medications or undergoing
procedures, such as CAT
scans or surgery.
7. Become aware of your family history. Look for things like diabetes, cholesterol, genetic illnesses, etc. For example, if you have a family history of breast cancer (a mother, aunt, sister or another relative), start receiving mammograms earlier because you’re at greater risk of developing the disease.
8. Build a support network: a spouse, friends, family or coworkers.
9. Consider environmental exposures or occupational hazards. Make sure your job or lifestyle isn’t going to harm your pregnancy, like heavy lifting, staying out in the sun, exposure to radiology, etc.
10. If applicable, consider your pregnancy history. Tell your doctor if you’ve had one or more miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies.

Just what should you know about prescription drugs? We sat down with Gary Grove, owner of Grove Pharmacy, to get some answers about meds.
417 Magazine: What should you do when your medications expire?
Gary Grove: Take them to your pharmacy. Don’t flush them down the toilet or throw them away, or you’ll be putting other people and animals at risk. At Grove Pharmacy, we take expired medications to a biohazard service.
417: What does it mean when medications expire, and can you still take them after the date has passed?
GG: The date on the drug bottle doesn’t mean it goes bad that day. That’s just the date it will start deteriorating and start losing its potency. It’s simply a guideline to know when your medication will start losing its effectiveness.
417: Where do pharmacists fit in with my routine medical care?
GG: Pharmacists aren’t just there to fill prescriptions. They can help explain everything about the drugs you’ve been prescribed: How to take it, what it does, possible side effects, etc. Pharmacists are there to give guidance and ensure you’re getting adequate help.
417: How can you save money on medications?
GG: If you’ve never taken a certain prescribed medication before, start out with a week’s supply instead of a month’s supply. That way, if you have an adverse reaction or need to stop taking the drug, you haven’t paid for too much. Generic drugs are a great way to save money. Name brands must be on the market for 13 years before a generic version can become available.—Melody Adams

We asked Top Doc Dr. David Afshar from Skaggs Family Health Clinic in Branson about your medical time line.
• If you’re overweight, have your cholesterol checked, no matter what age you are. “There are guidelines for when you should get tested for certain things, but it’s an individual basis based on each patient,” says Dr. Afshar.
• If you’ve reached age 50, it’s a good idea to have a colonoscopy. Get one sooner if you have a family history of colon problems.
• Women should start scheduling mammograms between ages 35 and 40.
• Men should receive prostate exams after age 45.
• Adults should always have their blood pressure checked, no matter what age. Children should have their blood pressure checked if they are overweight.
• Once you reach adulthood, make sure you’re up-to-date on your immunizations (most of which should’ve been taken care of in childhood). Just remember that immunization recommendations vary from year to year, so do what’s best for your specific health situation. —Melody Adams

The Problem
Searching the web for a diagnosis can be a good idea, if you know where to look. “One of the biggest problems is getting obscure information,” says Dr. Wanda Ethen. “We want to make sure they’re using reliable resources.” If you’re going to search, take whatever you read with a grain of salt; realize that it may not be correct or applicable to you because of your particular health situation.
Information Overload
Reading medical information on the web can cause problems with the patient/physician relationship. “Patients may try to diagnose or treat themselves, or they won’t want to comply with what the doctor thinks,” says Dr. Ethen. Or even worse, a patient could scare themselves by thinking the worst of what they read online, which may prevent them from being honest with the doctor.
What You Can Do
If you’re worried about something you’ve read on the Internet, print off a sheet and take it to your doctor. Be honest with your doctors about your concerns, and they can help sort through the fact and fiction.
Reputable Sources
Dr. Ethen suggests perusing organizational websites (such as the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association) for reputable information, as they usually display links to other quality sites. You can also read through medical journals, but medical jargon is often difficult to understand, and some can even be biased. Other sites, including uptodate.com and webmd.com are useful but shouldn’t be thought of as completely reliable. “Remember that anybody can put information out there,” says Dr. Ethen. “You have to be a skeptical buyer.” —Melody Adams
