When she’s not putting together outfits for 417 Magazine photo shoots, Style Coordinator Kaye Lee spends a couple weekends a month working as a sales associate at BCBG Max Azria in Dillard’s. “I feel like I actually pay them to work there,” Lee jokes, because she says she always finds things to buy while she’s working at the Battlefield Mall store. Lee has been interested in fashion for as long as she can remember. “My mom used to take me into the city two or three times a year to go to the mall to buy clothes and shoes,” says Lee, who grew up in a small town in Texas. Those few-times-per-year shopping trips have transformed into an activity that Lee does almost every day. “I’m always shopping, whether it’s for my job at the magazine, or helping a friend find an outfit, or going out after someone tells me there’s a sale...,” she says. And there’s one thing that she looks for more often than anything else: shoes. “I probably have anywhere from 175 to 200 pairs,” Lee says.
…has a helpful shopping tip:
“Never go shopping in your gym wear or after working out, or with no make up on. It’s like going to the grocery store when you’re hungry.”
…is a touch romantic.
She says her favorite outfit that she has ever worn is her wedding dress.
…finds fashion inspiration in the mirror.
“I think you should define your clothes around your own personality. I’m a firm believer that you are what you wear. The clothes you pick out to wear each day define how you feel about yourself, and it translates to your daily activities.”
…defines her style with the three S’s.
“Simple, sexy and sassy.”
…can’t pinpoint her favorite store in 417-land.
“I always shop local first–there are so many wonderful stores in the area, and I always manage to find something I want in all of them!”
…is dying for a local Nordstrom.
She says that’s the one store she wishes we had in Springfield.
…is empowered by her shoes.
“To quote Bette Midler, ‘Give a girl the correct footwear, and she can conquer the world.’”
…is embarrassed by the outfits she wore in high school.
“I’m sure if we got out some of my old yearbooks- there would be plenty of embarrassing outfits.”
…is crazy about Trina Turk.
“It’s almost like she is designing clothing for me. I can always put on one of her pieces and feel amazing.”
…won’t tell her husband how much she spends on shoes.
“I have several pairs of shoes that fall into the ‘most expensive thing I’ve ever bought’ category, but to keep from sleeping in the dog house, I’d rather not tell you how much.”
…finds a bargain every now and then.
“I’m not a very good bargain shopper, but I recently found an amazing pair of Gwen Stefani L.A.M.B. fur ankle boots on sale at Nordstrom. As far as how much they where… let’s just say I thought they were a bargain.”
…can name several best-dressed celebrities.
“My favorites right now are Carrie Underwood, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Giuliana Rancic. She’s really not a celebrity, but I love her style.”
…can go from PJs to glam in a little more than 30 minutes.
She says it takes her 35 minutes to get ready in the morning.
...won’t let go of her Jimmy Choos.
She says she has had a pink pair for more than 10 years, and she’s never getting rid of them.
“This will get me in trouble, but I’m not a fan of flip-flops, especially with jeans.”
