Tammy J. Kirks

47, Marketing Manager for Harem & Company; Owner of Red Bee Designs (jewelry)

417 Magazine: What’s your signature piece?
Tammy Kirks: Bold eyeglasses and red lipstick.

417: If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
T.K.: Robert Rodriguez. His pieces are timeless, but modern and edgy. I love the architecture of his clothes.

417: What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a must-have piece of clothing?
T.K.: I splurged on a leather jacket this year. It was an embarrassing amount, that’s all I’ll say.

417: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?
T.K.: Jeans with “butt bling” (rhinstones all over the pockets). I don’t need that much attention to my posterior.

417: Do you shop at thrift stores?
T.K.: Love thrifting! I look for vintage jackets, coats and sweaters. I also do a lot of shopping in the men’s department for coats, sweaters and shirts. I’ve even bought men’s shoes.

417: What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?
T.K.: Pajamas in public. Stop. The. Insanity.

417: Where do you find fashion inspiration?
T.K.: I read almost every current fashion magazine, but I get a lot of ideas from fashions of past decades, especially the ’60s and ’70s.

417: Who are your fashion role models?
T.K.: Jenna Lyons, Iris Apfel, Katherine Hepburn.

417: What three words define your personal style?
T.K.: Eclectic, evolving, retro.

417: How long does it take you to get ready to go out or go to work?
T.K.: About 45 minutes.

417: Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing...”
T.K.: Crocs. Never.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?
T.K.: Harem & Company, of course! I also love thrifting but I’m not willing to divulge my favorite places. Banana Republic is great for basics.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?
T.K.: Nordstrom, J. Crew, Savers in St. Louis and Worn in Des Moines.

417: What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?
T.K.: Many, many things. Let’s just say the late ’80s and early ’90s were a “dark period” in my fashion life.

417: What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?
T.K.: A genuine Coach bag, new, for $10.

417: What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?
T.K.: My Frye Harness boots are probably my favorite shoes ever. They never go out of style and always look cool.

417: What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
T.K.: Menswear for women. I can’t get enough of it!

See the Best Dressed winners walk the runway in 417 Magazine’s Fashionation: Spring Fashion Show and Party.
The show is at the Gillioz Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 21.
