417 Magazine: What is your signature piece?
Heather Kane: My 1976 Chevy Nova speaks to my style.

417: If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
H.K.: Yves Saint Laurent. The modern pieces are always amazing, but I would die to get my hands on a vintage YSL dress from the ’70s. I have been obsessed with French fashion from the ’70s ever since reading The Beautiful Fall: Fashion, Genius, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris

417: What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?
H.K.: Years ago, I found a pair of amazing mink earrings at a thrift store on Commercial Street for 5 bucks. Who would have thought of fur earrings?

417: What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?
H.K.: When I was in college, I got to model an evening gown covered head to toe in diamonds. It came complete with its own bodyguard.

417: What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
H.K.: Mixing casual pieces with more formal pieces. It’s a cool way to wear more of what’s in your closet.

417: Who are your fashion role models?
H.K.: I love Iris Apfel for her playfulness and attitude toward fashion, but my mother has always been my fashion role model.

417: What three words define your personal style?
H.K.: Eclectic, feminine, evolving

417: How long does it take you to get ready to do out or go to work?
H.K.: One hour or less.

417: Where do you find fashion inspiration?
H.K.: I live in a world of design and art, so I’m inspired by color, line and shape.  I could study street style photos from Paris and Milan for hours at a time. I’m always looking for my French doppelganger.

417: Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing…
H.K.: Running shoes with jeans.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?
H.K.: Modern Society, The Uptown Boutique, Staxx, Nomad, Arts & Letters and of course the Battlefield Mall.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?
H.K.: Well…. I love, love, love the Plaza in Kansas City. Some of my favorite online boutiques are ModCloth, Top Shop, Zara, Asos and Nasty Gal.

417: What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?
H.K.: Snake skin pants I bought from Funk & Junk in downtown Springfield. I was in high school and spent a whole month’s pay on them and thought they were the hottest! They were ridiculous.

417: What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a must-have piece of clothing?
H.K.: Shoes are my weakness, but I’ve been known to drop some dough on some high-end denim.

417: What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?
H.K.: Dressing inappropriately for Ozarks weather. It’s one thing to be caught without an umbrella—but come on!

417: Do you shop at thrift stores? If so, what do you look for?
H.K.: Duh! You can find some really unique pieces at thrift stores! I always keep my eye out for lovely vintage prints and patterns. If I find a print I love I may make it into something new and modern with just a few alterations.

417: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?
H.K.: Fashion haters. If you like it, rock it.

See the Best Dressed winners walk the runway in 417 Magazine’s Fashionation: Spring Fashion Show and Party.
The show is at the Gillioz Theatre at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 21.
