Ryan Boyle

39, Owner and Stylist at Karma Salon and International Platform Artist/Educator

417 Magazine: What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?

Ryan Boyle: I love dressing for the stage at hair shows. I can go over-the-top, and it’s accepted. It’s rock ’n’ roll and anything goes. I love this pair of Rockstar Sushi denim I have that laces down the side with leather, an LA find. They are rock ’n’ roll—very Steven Tyler.

417: What three words define your personal style?

R.B.: Edgy. Industrial. Confident.

417: What’s your signature piece?

R.B.: I would have to say a black V-neck tee for sure. It’s easy to dress up with a blazer or rock it out with jewelry and accessories. It’s my go-to piece to layer with anything.

417: How long does it take you to get ready to go out or go to work?

R.B.: It all depends on how much hot water my wife and kids leave me in the morning. Probably 10 to 15 minutes.

417: What’s a must-have piece of clothing that you’ve spent the most on?

R.B.: Alexander McQueen scarf. It’s so rock ’n’ roll! I could have bought a whole outfit and shoes for what I paid for it!

417: Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing...”

R.B.: Crocs.

417: Who are your fashion role models?

R.B.: My wife for sure! She’s always pushing me to expand my wardrobe and try new things I wouldn’t normally wear. She is consistently ahead of the trends.

417: Where do you find fashion inspiration?

R.B.: I find inspiration on the road, mostly doing hair shows. You can always find fashion when you’re surrounded by 60,000 hair stylists. Some are amazing, and some teach you what not to do, but in that environment there is always inspiration at the forefront of fashion trends.

417: If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

R.B.: I don’t really get caught up in brands or designers. As long as I have a great pair of denim and boots, I’m good.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?

R.B.: I don’t have a regular go-to shop but have recently found some cool stuff at Modern Society.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?

R.B.: Flasher on Melrose in L.A. It’s one of those stores that makes me wish I had unlimited funds!

417: What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?

R.B.: Fashion always feels right in that moment. It’s always looking back when you realize it wasn’t cool. Where do I start?

417: What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?

R.B.: Hand me downs. Actually, I love to find great deals on sites like Hautelook and JackThreads.

417: What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?

R.B.: Overkilling it! You have to have balance and know when enough is enough.

417: Do you shop at thrift stores? If so, what do you look for?

R.B.: Don’t have the patience but love the idea!

417: What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

R.B.: I love that wingtips are back as a rugged boot.

417: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?

R.B.: Men’s Toms slip-ons. It’s just not my thing. Also, embellished denim is worthy of mentioning.

See the Best Dressed winners walk the runway at 417 Magazine’s Fashionation: Spring Fashion Show and Party. The show is at the Gillioz Theatre at 7 p.m. on March 20.
