Jin J.X

32, Performing jazz guitarist and guitar and bass teacher

417 Magazine: Where do you find fashion inspiration?

Jin J.X: The 1960s. Dark, conservative colors meet light color contrasts.

417: What’s your signature piece?

J.J.X: My friends would say my black archtop guitar. It’s like the Cadillac of guitars. Clothing wise, it would be Doc Marten boots.

417: Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing...”

J.J.X: Camo.

417: Who are your fashion role models?

J.J.X: Duke Ellington, Malcolm X, Miles Davis, Steve Vai.

417: What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?

J.J.X: I bought a great vintage blue blazer with bronze buttons at the Belmont Army in Chicago years ago.

417: What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

J.J.X: I like that men are actually wearing slacks again.

417: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?

J.J.X: Grown men wearing baseball caps and jerseys. I mean, really?

417: What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?

J.J.X: In a wedding at age 14, nothing fit, so I had to pull off some high waters like Frankenstein.

417: What three words define your personal style?

J.J.X: Purple and black.

417: How long does it take you to get ready to go out or go to work?

J.J.X: Sometimes over an hour, but only because I shave my head and face.

417: If you could wear one brand or designer for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

J.J.X: I’m not too hung up on brand names, although I like Express. They have great looks for men that are fitted, which is a great touch.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?

J.J.X: Arts and Letters, Express, the Tanger Outlet in Branson.

417: What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?

J.J.X: and the World Market in Chicago. Also Marshalls and TJ Maxx have larger selections in bigger markets.

417: What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a must-have piece of clothing?

J.J.X:  I once bought an Express jacket that was somewhere near $175. It rarely gets worn for obvious reasons.

417: What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?

J.J.X: Black shoes white socks. It took someone calling me out for me to do better.

417: Do you shop at thrift stores? If so, what do you look for?

J.J.X: Thrift stores are a mixed bag because I am tall and finding things is weird. When I do, I look for great accessory pieces like vests which you can find cheaper if used.

417: What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?

J.J.X: I wear a Hindu prayer shawl. I’m so particular about it that I keep backups.
