417 Magazine: What is the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever worn?
Dominique Barnes: One time in high school I wore short denim shorts that I had made from an old pair of jeans over a pair of patterned black tights, with two different colored Converse All Stars, and a black zip-up hoodie. I thought I looked creative and edgy. No one said anything negative about my outfit, but I had a hunch it was not something I should repeat.
417: Where do you find fashion inspiration?
D.B.: Pinterest, mostly.
417: Do you shop at thrift stores? If so, what do you look for?
D.B.: Yes, I do! I look for things that are well-made and mostly fit. If they mostly fit, I’ll usually take a stab at altering them myself. And if I fail, I don’t feel bad because I usually didn’t spend much on them in the first place.
417: Finish this sentence: “I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing...”
D.B.: Crocs. Gross.
417: What’s your favorite outfit or article of clothing you’ve ever worn?
D.B.: I just bought a pair of black, high-waisted, skinny corduroys. I think they are my favorite clothing item of the moment.
417: Who are your fashion role models?
D.B.: Solange Knowles, Janelle Monae, and my mother.
417: What three words define your personal style?
D.B.: Comfortable, ambiguous, unashamed.
417: What’s your signature piece?
D.B.: Probably baggy tops. I have a billion of them.
417: How long does it take you to get ready to do out or go to work?
D.B.: About an hour.
417: What are your favorite places to shop that are in 417-land?
D.B.: I’ve gotten some cool accessories from Modern Society. Otherwise, I tend to simply venture to Battlefield Mall when I feel like shopping.
417: What are your favorite places to shop that are not in 417-land?
D.B.: The Gap! It’s not the same as the Gap outlet at all. When I’m in larger cities, I like to go to H&M. I also do a lot of online shopping. Asos.com is great for cheap, trendy pieces.
417: What’s the most you’ve ever spent on a must-have piece of clothing?
D.B.: I don’t know, maybe $60? I like to look good, but I always try to find a discount. I almost never buy anything full-price.
417: What’s the best bargain you’ve ever found?
D.B.: I can’t think of any in specific, but I recall finding numerous deals at the Gap throughout the years and at Dillard’s on New Year’s Day.
417: What do you think is the worst fashion faux pas?
D.B.: Visible butt crack due to pants that don’t fit. Nothing is more disgusting.
417: What is your favorite fashion trend right now?
D.B.: High-waisted bottoms and crop tops.
417: What fashion trend do you wish would go away?
D.B.: Leggings as pants. I believe if someone is going to go out in public wearing leggings, they should at least have their bum covered.
