Like all other 417-landers who have an appreciation for sweets, I’ve been a life-long fan of Andy’s Frozen Custard. That’s why when I heard that Black Sheep Burgers & Shakes (209 E. Walnut St., Springfield, 417-319-5905) was serving up freshly made shakes starring this treat, I knew I had to go. I met a couple of my gal pals at Black Sheep on a recent Friday night. We snagged a few seats at the bar, and I immediately ordered the Purple Haze, a shake made with homemade blackberry pie, two ounces of blackberry moonshine and three hefty scoops of Andy’s Frozen Custard. My heart skipped a beat when a giant glass brimming with the thick, lilac-colored drink was placed in front of me. After just one sip through the oversized neon straw, I was in love. The creamy vanilla custard made the creation thicker than most shakes, and there were pieces of actual blackberry pie in every slurp. The moonshine is almost an afterthought, leaving a bit of its sharp boozy flavor on your tongue long after you swallow. Although I was a fan of the kick, I think the shake would be just as tasty without the booze—an option available for $3 less.
