Local Notables and Their Animal Friends
By Tiesha Miller
Their names you’ve probably heard. We’ve seen the buildings they’ve designed, heard them announce the Cardinals games, shopped at their stores, enjoyed a coffee house where their paintings set the tone. And when they exit the local spotlight, these are the pets they’re eager to get home to.Meghan Chambers, owner of Staxx, and Leena
If there was ever a person to dress up her dog, fashion maven and Staxx clothing store owner Meghan Chambers seems like she’d be it. Turns out, that’s far from the truth. Chambers explains, Leena, a mutt, isn’t really the kind of dog you dress up. She’s too big and too playful, and it just doesn’t seem, well, fitting.More than anything, Leena loves people. She loves new faces, and she particularly loves children. “She’s very, very loving to kids,” Chambers says. “She and a friend’s 6-year-old are the best of friends.”
Three years ago, a good friend of Chambers’ was moving to a loft downtown that wasn’t fit for a dog of Leena’s size, so Chambers took her in, and the two have since bonded. When Chambers works late at the store or is gone extensively, Leena makes a point to find a magazine Chambers has been carrying around or a pair of shoes she’s just been wearing, carry it to the back yard and kindly chew it up—just to let her know she’d like to see her a little more.
