Pet Tales

Local artist Jane Troup with her dog, Daughney, and cat, Pumpkin

“I have the skinniest dog and the fattest cat,” Jane Troup laughs, as Pumpkin, her big orange cat who weighs as much as her whippet, moseys over. “[Pumpkin’s] name is quite adequate,” Troup says. “The funny thing is, he was skinny when my kids named him.” Friends of Troup often call Pumpkin The Buddha for his size and attitude—nothing really seems to get to him. He’s been with the family for about 10 years, and if Troup is sitting on the couch reading the paper, it’s a near guarantee that he’ll come plop down on her.

Daughney is a bit more high-energy. “When they’re young, whippets are like popcorn,” Troup says. The dog, who has been with the family for seven years, has settled down since her puppy stage but still has plenty of energy to go around.

Even with their varying personalities, the two pets get along just fine and are around regularly as Troup works. In addition to her paintings that can be found about town at
the Springfield Art Museum  and MudLounge in downtown Springfield, Troup also paints commissioned pet portraits. She’s painted Pumpkin and Daughney’s partner, who has since passed. For more information on Troup’s work, visit janetroup.com.
