Barry Hinson, Missouri State head basketball coach, and his two labs, Honey and Scout
“Bylaw 1, Rule 1 in the manual of head coaches is all coaches must have a dog,” Barry Hinson says. “Fortunately, we have two.” Hinson and his wife, Angie, have an 8-year-old black lab, Scout, and a 2-year-old yellow lab, Honey. “They love to chase the ball,” Hinson says. “They would rather chase or retrieve something than eat a T-bone steak. When we first played ball with Honey, she fainted in the front yard. I thought I’d killed her.” As a pup, Honey wouldn’t leave Hinson’s side. Now that the couple’s two daughters, ages 24 and 26, have moved away from home, Honey and Scout have filled some of the empty-nest void. Every night Hinson, Honey and Scout take a walk. During basketball season, they can be seen out as late as 1 a.m. “They’re absolutely the best thing for any coach because they don’t care,” Hinson says. “When you come home, you’ve won every ball game. I put my tennis shoes on, and it’s game time. When you go walking, it’s the first and the last walk they’ve ever had. They’re just that excited.”
