Trash Talk Resource Guide

We told you how to get rid of all your junk and where you can donate or sell it around 417-land. But how do you find all those places? No worries, we did the work for you.

Stocked Exchange

Want to sell or swap your stuff? Look online.

Freecycle.org: Individuals can log onto this grassroots website and browse through items others are giving away in their area. Membership is free, but browsers beware: searching through other people’s virtual junk can become a bit tedious. Just hold out, and you may find a diamond in the junk.

Paperbackswap.com: A free membership and a shelf full of dusty novels allows you to trade books with others. Members post their available books online. When another member requests your book, you pay the shipping and send it to them. Once confirmed, you receive a virtual credit that allows you to choose someone else’s book, and the favor is returned.

Craigslist.org: It’s true that one person’s junk is another’s treasure. Log on to your local listing and buy or sell items in categories including books, appliances, jewelry, furniture, farm and garden and household. You can even search for services like event planning and computer automotive services.

eBay.com: The worldwide, online auction site has become a household term. Members can buy and sell from a wide variety of categories, with the option to place a competitive bid or simply buy the item at a set asking price. Some of the more unique categories include sports memorabilia, event tickets, airline travel and art directly from the artist.

Trash It!

There are some things too dangerous or environmentally unsafe to send to a landfill. Here’s how to get rid of them.

1. Tires. Dispose of old tires properly by taking them to several local places: G.L. Moore Tire Center, Jeff Parnell Tire, Big O Tires, Mitchem Tire & Wheel, Smart Buy Tire, Well’s Tire & Auto and Wingfood, LLC.

2. Paint and paint thinners. The Springfield Household Chemical Collection Center doesn’t take paint or paint thinners. Instead, they advise mixing cat litter or sand into the paint, leaving the lid off and throwing it away when it’s dry.

3. Intact light bulbs. Take to Springfield’s Household Chemical Collection Center, the Computer Recycling Center or Home Depot.

4. Antifreeze. Send antifreeze to Springfield’s Household Chemical Collection Center, Import Car Service or Jiffy Lube.

5. Rechargeable batteries. Drop them off at Batteries Plus, Lowe’s, Springfield’s Household Chemical Collection Center or the Computer Recycling Center.

6. Pesticides and fertilizers. Take containers of pesticide to Springfield’s Household Chemical Collection Center.

7. Yard waste. Dispose of sticks and other stuff from your yard at the Springfield Yardwaste Recycling Center.

8. Plastic grocery bags. Take those pesky plastic bags to the Christian Foundation, all Dillion’s locations, the Salvation Army and Victory Mission.
