bedside manner AWARDS

For the fourth time, we've asked doctors across 417-land to tell us which physicians deserve the honor of Top Doctor-the most well-regarded physicians in their medical specialties. Almost as important as the degrees hanging on their office walls, though, is how these physicians handle their patients. So we let you vote. You're the ones who have suffered through hospital gowns that barely covered your backsides, battled cold stethoscope shivers and spent real time with these doctors. As we expected, this list has few specialists and therefore few Top Doctors. This doesn't mean the Top Doctors are necessarily meanies. Rather, patients see their family practitioners more frequently than they see specialists.

Dr. Kristen Glover
Cox Family Medicine Associates, 3850 S. National Ave., Springfield, 417-269-7878
"She carefully listens, acts as an interim therapist when I cry in her office. (And as a sufferer of chronic pain, that's nearly every visit.) And she isn't too busy to call pharmacists when they mess up my meds. Her appointments are punctual, she has a terrific sense of humor, and she keeps up-to-date on medical breakthroughs. My husband, who's pathologically afraid of medicine, actually calls and schedules his own annual checkups with minimal nagging from me. She has nurtured us through our tears and followed up with the documentation we need for work and school. Her personally typed and signed letters are always ready no later than 24 to 48 hours after the request." -Stephanie Marshall, Springfield

Dr. Richard Temofeew
St. John's Clinic - Pediatrics, 940 W. Mount Vernon St., Nixa, 417-724-5437
"My children actually ask to go to see him when they are sick. He has always said not to hesitate to call him at home. I never thought I would actually call him, but one day my 17-month-old son fell down the stairs, cutting a huge gash in his tongue. It was a Sunday night, and he was really bleeding. I picked up the phone in a panic and called Dr. Temofeew. Instead of telling me if I should take him to the doctor, he immediately came over and examined my son himself." -Shannon Merced, Springfield

Dr. Doug McNeil
Pediatric Center, 3443 S. National Ave., Springfield, 417-269-2000
"As members of the medical community, my parents were particular in picking my doctor. He is an excellent physician, but I do have one complaint. He fired me as a patient. At 16, he encouraged me to find a primary care physician; at 18 he gave me a shove; and finally at 21, I received a letter stating that I had outgrown his clients' 'usual and customary age.' I was devastated, mostly because he had been such a fantastic doctor. I am 24 years old now and have had a longer relationship with Dr. McNeil than any boyfriend to date." -Jennifer L. Boyd, Kansas City

Dr. Steven Otto
Ferrell-Duncan Clinic, 1001 E. Primrose St., Springfield, 417-875-3000
"A few years back, I had to have a spinal tap. As I lay on my side in the hospital bed, he told me he would be starting the procedure and then began chatting it up with me about everything except what was happening. Finally he tells me 'we're finished.' I hadn't felt a thing. I said to him 'No Way!' and his reply to me was 'Way!', mimicking Wayne's World. Not only was he great with the physical part of the procedure, but also he had genuine concern for my comfort." - Joy Hoskins, Springfield

Dr. Barbara Pierce
Family and Occupational Medicine of Monett, 2200 E. Cleveland Ave., Monett, 417-236-2600
"She cares about her patients and continually demonstrates it in the community. If I happen to bump into her at Wal-Mart, she will ask me about my children (by name). When at sporting events she has no problems giving free medical advice, and I never feel as though she is part of the untouchable upper crust of the community." -Tia Bremer, Monett
