Quick Dish: Yum Yum Bowl
Yum Yum Bowl is John and Johnson Tan’s (of Ocean Zen fame) ingenious foray into the quick-dining market, and at first blush it’s a rousing success. Yum Yum Bowl’s limited menu is, true to its name, mostly a selection of about a dozen bowl-served recipes, which include rice, veggies and your choice of chicken, beef, pork, shrimp or extra veggies tossed in one of a variety of sauces. On a recent lunch, I tried the Island Style BBQ pork bowl, while Table Talk’s favorite intern Will Brooks had the cashew chicken bowl. Both were delicious, with hearty, non-gelatinous meat (“This doesn’t taste like it’s been sitting in a slow cooker,” said Will). I particularly loved the super-crisp zucchini and carrots. My only minor complaint was that I would have liked a little more pork in my bowl, though I hardly left hungry. Prices range from about $6 to about $9, with a combo (crispy egg roll and a drink) costing you another $1.50.
