Q&A with Selena

What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?
“Probably a year ago a girl I went to high school with sent me a random e-mail. I hadn’t seen her in probably 10 years, and she just sent me an e-mail saying that she and her daughter had gotten involved in church and things were going really well in their lives, and she just wanted to thank me for being such a great friend to her and a great role model to her back when we were in high school. And she talked about how people would kind of make fun of me or give me a hard time because of the stance I took in high school—I’m kind of a goody-two shoes—and she said I just want you to know that it made a difference in my life, the person that you were back when we were in high school. I have kept that and that was probably one of the neatest things anyone has ever said to me or sent me just out of the blue.”

What is your most prized possession?
“My most prized possession is a Bible that was given to me by my parents when I was 16, and it is my most prized possession because it has traveled everywhere with me. I mean everywhere I’ve ever gone since I was 16 years old. It’s completely falling apart, and I’m going to have to get it rebound.”

Who is a woman that you consider beautiful?
“My mother is truly the most beautiful women I have ever known, inside and out. To me she has always looked like a movie star with the heart of a saint. She is very selfless and has always taught me by her life example to put the needs of others before my own.”

What are three words that describe you?
“I would say Christian, sincere, and joyful.”

What do you think makes a woman beautiful?
“The fact that we are created in the very image of God is what makes all people beautiful. The Bible tells us in Psalm 139 that ‘all the days ordained (chosen) for me was written in your book before one of them came to be,’ to be chosen and created by God ‘on purpose and for a purpose’ is what gives us all true worth and Beauty.”

What’s your favorite feature about yourself?
“My favorite feature about myself, I think, is probably my ability to see good in others.”

What are you most proud of?
“The young people who pass through our lives and through love for, faith in and obedience to Jesus Christ choose to live the life that God created them for.”

What’s your favorite source of inspiration?
“God’s word inspires me. I also love worship music, especially David Crowder and Hillsong.”

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“’You can teach what you know, but you will only reproduce who you are.’ Being a teacher, you can talk until your blue in the face, but what people will hear is what they see.”

What’s your biggest goal in life?
“My biggest goal in life is absolutely to lead my children in their walk with Christ and to know that I have lived out the life that God has called me to live with my family, and with my job and just with everyone I come in contact with. A shorter way to sum that up I guess is to show others the love of Jesus Christ is what my life, I mean I hope what my life would be all about.”

What are your hobbies?
“I don’t feel like I have a lot of hobbies. I love having people in my home. I cook a lot for people and we have a lot of youth in our home and our kids friends. So that’s something that I really enjoy doing. I enjoy decorating. I really enjoy decorating at Christmas and those types of things.”

Who is your celebrity crush?
“None. I only have eyes for the precious man I married 15 years ago. He is my best friend and the love of my life.”

What was your worst date ever?
“I went on a date with a young man after I had met my husband, and I decided to go out with him even knowing that I was really attracted to my husband and it was really just miserable because I didn’t want to be on the date.”

What’s your favorite way to spend a Saturday?
“Sleeping in with my husband, cooking a big breakfast for lunch, and hanging out with our family followed by a trip to Springfield for dinner and a movie.”

What is your Facebook status right now?
“Jesus is the answer.”

If you could invite anyone to dinner, who would it be and why?
“I would invite Tim Tebow to dinner. As someone who works with youth, I greatly admire his commitment to Jesus Christ and the boldness with which he uses his wonderful success in football to share his faith. We would fry up a bunch of fish and taters and invite all our youth over to be inspired by this fantastic football player and awesome man of God.”
