The Photographer - Turner Creative

Q. How did you get into the photography business? And how was Turner Creative created?
A. When my daughter was born, I discovered a love for photography. Having been a graphic artist for several years, I decided to start a freelance graphic design / photography business (hence Turner Creative instead of Turner Photography). After a couple of weddings, I realized how much I love to capture the relationships people have. Besides – who wouldn’t enjoy being around people who are so happy and in love all the time?

Q. What are the latest trends that you are seeing more and more of in wedding photography?
A. There is a much bigger emphasis on capturing the feeling and emotion of the wedding day, as opposed to just tons of posed group shots. Brides want to see all of the details they worked so hard to plan conveyed in their wedding album. The engagement session is becoming more popular, captured in an “in the moment” style as well – some couples even have destination engagement sessions!

Q. In your opinion, what are the best poses and shots for today’s couples?
A. Anything goes! I love close and intimate shots, but also an image that captures the surroundings. To best tell their love story, it is important to get to know the couple prior to the wedding day (i.e. the engagement session). I recently had an E-Session with a couple at Jordan Valley Park, the area holds great significance for them as they went to prom at The Tower Club, their first date was at Jordan Valley Park, AND he proposed there as well!

Q. Everyone’s interested in planning around a budget. Are there any ways to cut costs with wedding photography?
A. Most photographers are willing to customize a package to include what options you would like, then the couple can shop to decide which photographer provides what you would like to have and is closest to your budget. Although budget is extremely important, don’t forget that these photos will become priceless family heirlooms for future generations. The photographer’s experience and style should be taken into consideration before making a final decision – don’t sacrifice quality for cost.

Q. What are the most challenging aspects of wedding day photography?
A. How do you overcome these and help your clients feel at ease? Probably the biggest challenge on a busy wedding day is changing lighting/weather conditions. I approach this by arriving prepared with equipment for different situations.

Q. There must be a lot of pressure in shooting a couple’s wedding. How do you approach this and get through it?
A. There is a lot of pressure, but for me the excitement is far greater… I always feel so honored that a couple has chosen me to photograph their wedding, that I focus on what I am doing and the pressure just pushes me to work that much harder to provide amazing images.

Q. What is the craziest photo/pose you have ever taken?
A. In November 2007 I had a Trash the Dress session with a bride who was determined to have some photos in the water. It just so happened to be 34 degrees that day, and the water was frigid, but we carefully planned it so they would be in the water for under a minute. The shots were amazing!

Q. What makes shooting weddings so special to you?
A. Besides the birth of a child, your wedding day is most likely the most important day of your life. I want to capture the way he looks at you from across the room, the look you give him when he says something crazy, how he puts his hand in the small of your back, how amazing you look in that dress you’ve dreamed about since you were a little girl… the list could go on for miles!
