Ugly Yard Voting

Thank you to all who voted in our Ugly Yard contest! We’ve narrowed it down to the Top 10 ugly yards, and you've helped us pick the ugliest. Who is most in need of a $2,500 front yard-makeover from Garden Adventures Nursery, Sticks and Stones Landscapes, and landscape installer Jeff Eggleston? The winner will be announced at our Ugly Yard event on March 4 at Garden Adventures Nursery, starting at 6 p.m. All finalists will be in attendance to find out who wins the grand prize. You, too, are invited to congratulate the winner and to check out Garden Adventures Nursery for yourself (just in time for spring).

I’ve got a cute house, but a sad yard
I recently bought my first house a year ago just before Christmas. While the yard was lacking in grass, the home I couldn't pass up. Last spring, I heavily seeded, laid hay and got what you see in the picture--crabgrass and bare spots. Slowly I began to realize grass doesn't grow through gravel and old trees. I know any tree or bush will do, but one bush isn't going to cure the bland. Please match the curb appeal of my yard to the charm of my home.
I want my dream home back
My neighbor’s first reaction when I purchased my first home three years ago sums up my yard: "Oh, you moved into the jungle." After many efforts and lots of money, I decided maybe my yard just doesn't want to be pretty. But I never give up. Despite my efforts, within two weeks all my hard work was covered in weeds and completely dead. I just sadly mow over the weeds and have settled with the idea that I will never have curb appeal. The house has so much potential, and I dream of elephant ears welcoming me when I come home everyday.
Please help make my 60 neighbors pleased
Our home was one of the first in the neighborhood 10 years ago. The house is beautiful and sits on a corner lot. In the past 10 years, homes have been built around us with lavish landscaping. Ours still sits with an empty yard, no trees and a hydrant and cable box right on the corner. The yard had weeds growing, and finally our neighbor (who happens to be my father-in-law) paid for a spray company to come out and take care of the weeds. Because our home sits on a corner lot, the driveway faces a different direction from the front door, but there is no walkway to get to the front door. So guests either park on the street or walk through the grass to get to the front door.
We are a young couple in need of new curb appeal
Our neighborhood is filled with nice retired couples who spend their entire springtime in their gardens and landscapes that make their houses pop in the summer! We recently moved here as a new young couple, just a dollar short of joining in. The one thing we miss is the "curb appeal" to keep us in stride with everyone else. The last thing any homeowner wants is to drag the street down with looks from the average drive-by. PLEASE HELP US!
Help bring our yard back to life
We bought a foreclosed house, and the previous residents took the old landscape. A maple tree died in the front yard less than a year after we moved in, and we had to take it out. We then bought some border and four shrubs (one of which looks like it is dying) and it just did not turn out like we had hoped and does not look very good. I guess you could say we do not have green thumbs nor do we have the vision. PLEASE HELP!
I’m dreaming of a new beautiful yard
We built our home four years ago and ran out of money for landscaping. My husband works hard mowing and weed-eating the yard we do have, but we need help with all the Missouri rocks. We have two piles of dirt and rocks on both sides of our house left over from the digging of the basement. We have a circle drive which is hard to find with all the grass that grows in it. The trees we do have are cedar and locust, and not very pretty. I think by looking, you can see we have one of the ugliest yards in 417-land and are in desperate need of help. Any work done would be a great improvement. Thank you for your consideration.
I want to cry every time I come home
Does it get any uglier than this? We built our house in 2008, and before we knew it, our builder had run WAY over budget! By the time the house was completed, we had no money leftover to do any landscaping and we need HELP! Our house would be so pretty if only these talented landscapers would come help us. I just want to cry every time I come home and see this yard.
My “grass” is nothing but weeds clumped together
What makes my front yard so ugly is the grass and lack of landscaping! I have tried to landscape, but it has never turned out great and usually ends up dying. When we moved into the house, there was already a beautiful, mature tree in the center of the yard. I attempted a small flower garden and planted a little maple tree on the south side of the flower garden. The yard was drastically changed after the December 2007 ice storm when it took our large, beautiful tree.
We want some color
My yard has no color and no flowers because we have no clue what to plant that the animals will not eat. The front flower bed is falling apart, but we don’t know how to fix it, and the front walk path is dangerous to walk on because of the steps and jagged rocks. Plus, we have a hill that we don’t want to throw a bunch of money into, only to watch it roll down the hill after a heavy rain.
I am the sad, ugly house on the street
I have a nice house from the outside, but my yard barely grows grass due to drainage problems and lots of tree roots. The bushes on one side of the house are 30 years old, and there are no bushes or any landscaping at all on the other side – just weeds. When I saw the promotion for the Ugly Yard Contest, I thought, "This is something I could win!" Sad... but I am sure my neighbors all agree.
