What's at the Moxie?: Oscar fever

Dan Chilton owns downtown Springfield's independent cinema, the Moxie, with his wife Nicole. He's been kind enough to agree to send us regular update on what's playing at the Moxie, so 417-landers who may not frequent downtown can stay in the know. You can find out more about the Moxie at moxiecinema.com.

Here at The Moxie, Oscar Sunday is our version of Super Bowl Sunday. We love showing quality films all year long (duh), and it's gratifying to see them receive the attention they deserve during Hollywood's biggest night. We've shown more nominees this year than any other, so we're especially excited to see how many awards they'll take home. We loved all the nominees we showed this year, but when it comes to the Oscars you can't play favorites, so here's The Moxie's official Oscar predictions:

BEST PICTURE: Slumdog Millionaire (no contest)
BEST ACTRESS: Kate Winslet, The Reader (this marks her sixth nomination, but it will be her first win)
BEST ACTOR: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler (razor to the head, staples to the chest, need I say more)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona (this was a toughy... we wouldn't mind if Amy Adams won either)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Heath Ledger (I don't think he deserves it - Oscars shouldn't be memorial tributes - but it's hard to slow the momentum)
BEST DIRECTOR: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire (again, no contest)
BEST DOCUMENTARY: Man on Wire (if you missed it at The Moxie, go out and rent it this weekend. It's phenomenal)
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: Waltz With Bashir or The Class (both coming to the Moxie in the next few weeks)

Those are the important ones. Rule of thumb: whenever a category comes up that includes Slumdog, the probability of it winning is 80 percent or more. Trust me on that one. No matter who wins on Sunday night, the big winners of the evening are you, the audience. 2008 was a terrific year for film, and we look forward to showing the future 2009 Oscar nominees all year long here at The Moxie.
