Hot Husbands Finalist: Juris Simanis
Every weekday through Friday, May 30 we'll be unveiling our Hot Husbands finalists (in no particular order) one-by-one here at the 417 Blog. The purpose? To let you gradually get acquainted with the men you'll be voting on beginning June 1 in our first-ever Hot Husbands contest. You'll vote the 20 finalists down to our 10 Hot Husband winners, to be presented in the September issue of 417 Magazine. So of course we want you to have the information you need to make the best choices—though you can't go wrong with any of these guys.
Juris Simanis, 39
Town: Bolivar
Occupation: Sports Medicine/Family Practice MD
Family: Juris says he and his wife, Catherine, have four four-legged children: Max, Grace, Henley and Murphy
Why he’s great: In addition to his role as head team physician for Southwest Baptist University, Juris also initiated and organized a weekend clinic for all local high school athletes during the football season last year. He’s the volunteer medical director for the Pleasant Hope Emergency Medical Services and provided volunteer medical coverage for a number of community and regional events, such as the annual YMCA Polar Bear Run and the CMH Holiday Run. He’s also a Nordic Ski patroller/medical instructor for the Hidden Valley Ski Patrol in Eureka. Juris also served as a public health Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. “A person’s health can be affected as much by the community they live in as by the personal decisions and individual choices they make,” he says. “So my community involvement not only is a way of giving back for the blessed opportunities I have been afforded in my life but also helps improve the quality and health of the community as a whole.”
Hobbies: Supporting local community events and charities such as farmer’s markets, CMH Burgundy Ball and festivals. (“And yes, I do love kettle corn.”) Other hobbies include teaching, cycling, tennis, scuba diving, sailing, skiing, cooking, traveling, gardening/landscaping, reading, opera and acoustic guitar.
Why he’s a Hot Husband: The strength, determination and strong moral values passed down from my parents, in addition to my unique set of life experiences, have forged the self-confident, chivalrous and hardworking man I am today and continue to strive to be. What I also know without a doubt is that I am married to easily the “hottest” wife, whose love and affection make my entire world spin around.

Oh my goodness, I knew him back when he was a Resident MD in Roanoke, Virginia and he asked me a time or two. He was not married at the time, he was certainly the "Hottest Resident" and every bit the gentleman the article describes. I never forgot about him and I just looked for him to see where he was now hoping to say hello and catch up. This is 100% my loss and his wife is a very lucky woman. Hindsight is definitely 20/20. I genuinely wish him and his wife nothing but the best! I am off to kick myself now!!!-- Diane Hoke
