The second installment of Friday Flix in Mother's Backyard is the Coen Brothers' 2000 O Brother, Where Art Thou?
A love letter to Depression-era Americana, O Brother blends elements of farce and satire in a epic tale with structural debt to Homer's The Odyssey.
All the elements of a Coen Brothers film are here: hapless heroes navigating absurd scenarios with only their wits (or lack thereof), memorable dialogue, skewed humor, indelible imagery, and - why not? - a Busby Berkley-esque sequence. Finish it off with Roger Deakins' gorgeous cinematography and a brilliant soundtrack by T-Bone Burnett.
It's bona fide.
