About This Event
Our democracy depends on citizens being engaged, informed and ready to vote. Women in particular can be a powerful voting bloc. But why do many people choose not to vote? What stands in their way?
The League of Women Voters has been standing up for voters’ rights since it was founded 100 years ago by leaders of the women’s suffrage movement.
Joan Gentry is voter services chair of the League of Women Voters of Southwest Missouri and Ann Elwell is a League past president (and a past member of Women in Communications). They will discuss achievements gained in the century since the 19th Amendment passed, including those by women of color who made strides in spite of Jim Crow laws. With November right around the corner, they’ll also share information on new ways of voting, including mail-in ballots as well as how to learn more about what’s on your ballot—before you walk into the voting booth.
