Paint a Masterpiece

Get creative with mom by reserving a space at Painting with a Twist (3444 S. Campbell Ave., Suite G, Springfield, 417-755-7760) for the Mother’s Day Sunny Bouquet class. Classes at Painting with a Twist are BYOB, so you can bring a summery drink (and some finger foods) as you paint some petals and take home a unique keepsake. Check the website for availability, extra dates, safety measures and all the details.

Have a Waterside Picnic

Sometimes the simplest option is the best—like packing a picnic basket with goodies and soaking up the sun together outdoors. This one leaves us particularly spoiled for choice, since you have almost-endless options for locally sourced food, drinks and snacks, and a variety of beautiful parks to pick from. For Mother’s Day, try Grand Falls (5400 S. Riverside Dr., Joplin) where you can snag a spot beside the water to sit and take in the view, or toss of your shoes for a little wading.

Dig into a Lazy Brunch

What kind of food and atmosphere does Mom love? We bet you can find an indulgent brunch to match it. Just a few examples: The Worman House Bistro at Big Cedar Lodge has upscale vibes and French flair. The Ozark Mill Restaurant at Finley Farms offers pretty riverside views and a modern-meets-historical vibe. Check out more brunch options below.

Take a Cooking Class

Learning a new skill is even more fun when you do it with a buddy by your side. Italian Kitchen offers hands-on Italian cooking classes, and recent topics have included baking focaccia, make gnocchi, crafting Italian breadsticks and more. After the class, you and Mom can take your skills back to the rest of the family and prepare a feast together.

Soak Up the Sun

If your mom’s a sun-lover and a lake-lover, book her a little bit of both. Big Cedar Lodge offers brunch and dinner cruises on the Lady Liberty, a luxury yacht that departs from Camp Long Creek for a peaceful ride around Table Rock Lake. You and your mom can relax together with the water, the sun and some good food to keep you company on this peaceful cruise.

Don't Forget the Flowers!

Okay, this one’s not an activity, but it is the gift that keeps on giving. Give your mom a Summer CSA bouquet subscription from Stone Hill Farm, so she can have fresh flowers all season long. When you purchase the CSA, you support this local flower farm, and in return you get weekly bouquets of the freshest flowers. In the summer, the bouquets include everything from dahlias and zinnias to herbs.
