417 Magazine: What’s your vision for Millwood now that you’ve taken the reins from your parents? Are there changes you plan to focus on?
Abby Schumacher-Harrison: My parents are still involved, but a little less. My role as a general manager and owner is more day-to-day. Our vision is to continue the legacy that our family has built. Our country club is very different and unique—we focus a lot on family environment. Our members are truly amazing people and the reason we love our job so much. Part of our vision, as well, is having a great community where everybody feels supported and can use the club in so many different ways. When you join Millwood, you’re really joining our family.
417: What has taking a step up in the business been like for you?
A.S.H.: It’s been amazing. I’ve worked for my dad since I was 14. My dad is the person I look up to the most in this world. That they have this much confidence in us as their children and their legacy is so special. Working with my family brings tears to my eyes—it’s such a blessing.
417: What do you want members and guests to feel when they visit Millwood?
A.S.H.: I want it to be their home away from home. Without our members here at Millwood, we’re nothing. They’re the reason we’re here and we get to live out our dream as business owners. I want them to feel like they can come here in their happiest days and their worst days too. It’s something they invested their time in, financially as well, and I want them to feel how appreciative we are and how much love we have for them.
417: Looking ahead, what legacy do you, your husband and your sister hope to leave for the club and the community?
A.S.H.: This year, we’ve really focused on being as involved in the community as possible. We’re very philanthropic, and we love to be involved in local charity events—I sit on two committees for the American Cancer Society. We love giving back to the community that gives so much to us. I hope we leave a legacy of kindness.
