Description:
The Food Editor creates compelling editorial content for the Food beat for both print and online, including creating engaging digital- or social-specific enhancements.

Responsibilities:
1. Represent yourself as the 417 Magazine Food Editor and build rapport with community members.
2. Own content creation for the Taste department in 417 Magazine and for the Food beat online from start (research and pitch ideas) to finish (write and revise copy, create and share digital components). Research, pitch and produce original content within the Food beat that is in line with the 417 reader. This includes:
• Participate in and contribute to monthly editorial pitch meetings to pitch your story ideas. Usually the first Monday of every month.
• Share intel on other topics of interest to the appropriate beat writer
• Pitching, reporting, writing and enhancing content for 8 to 10 stories per issue for print and/or blogs. Use 417 Iineups for organizing pitches and source contact information.
• Writing the corresponding weekly e-newsletter, Table Talk
• Being visible in related social media posts and creating digital enhancements such as video.

Examples of food beat content:

• Restaurant reviews
• Themed lists (i.e. If an ingredient is trending, find five restaurants who have incorporated it into menu items this season.)
• Food news and updates (restaurants openings, new menus, new projects or events at local restaurants or in the food community, chefs moving from restaurant to restaurant, profiles of locally made food products, etc.)

• Recipes, sometimes with an essay component
• Dish roundups (i.e. 7 Good Things) and individual dish profiles (Worth It)
• Cocktail/drink reviews
• Three to four food-centric cover stories per year.
• Sharing certain specific details about restaurants that have opened, closed, updated horse, etc. to editorial team for updating the print and digital dining guide.

3.  Fact check your stories, follow defined style guides and follow the parameters of the story assignments and the voice of the magazine. Make revisions requested by the editor.

Use your expertise and influence to build the 417 Magazine brand publicly through social networking.
• Add 417 Magazine Food Editor to your social profiles.
• Use personal channels to drive people to 417-owned social feeds/sites. Post with each issue and/or video release.
• When posting relevant content to your personal social media and/or other media outlets/content creator platforms, tag 417 Magazine.

5.
Contributor agrees to work within and adhere to the established timeline and be available for collaborative sessions when needed.
6.
Contributor agrees, in accordance with 417’s standard freelance agreement, that all original materials produced are royalty-free, transferable and are produced with a non-exclusive license to publish, republish and distribute in any form. Contributor has rights promote their involvement with the project.

Education Requirements and Work Experience:
• Bachelor’s in Journalism, or equivalent experience and education
• 1–3 years work experience (fantastic internship experience counts)

Skills and Strengths:
• Passion for the local food community
• Exceptional time-management and planning skills.
• Relationship driven with strong communication skills. Solid working relationship with (and the respect of) the sources, community members and internal teams.
• Excellent interpersonal skills that strike a balance of highly assertive and super charismatic
• Passion for interviewing, reporting and creating content
• Strong writing and editing ability
• Bright, conversational writing style
• Videography experience is a bonus but not required
• Creative thinking, ability to offer input in meetings and confidence to share ideas
• Comfort with following direction and receiving feedback as required
• Management of a workload with multiple projects and competing deadlines
• Oh—and last but not least, a passion for excellence

Benefits:
• This position is a freelance position therefore not eligible for company benefits

Environmental Requirements:
• Contributor will work from home but be expected to join certain meetings at the 417 Magazine office when needed
• Computer with access to internet and Microsoft Word required
• Valid drivers license and reliable transportation required.
