It’s the time of year when we all look forward to receiving invitations to holiday parties.  But as exciting as that upcoming party might be, the words “holiday party” often lead to our biggest fear: figuring out what to wear. My advice is this: What you wear to an office party should be different than what you wear to a friend’s party. And when shopping, be sure to look for clothing that can be mixed in with your current wardrobe.

1. The Perfect Coat
Invest in a classic coat that can carry you through many winter parties. You’ve put time, effort and money into your holiday attire, so make sure your first impression is a lasting one with a beautiful coat.
Luisa Cerano raccoon butterscotch fur scarf, $465; Elle Tahari ruby coat, $798; both from Harem & Company

2. Faux Fur
The perfect staple item is faux fur. It’s a great way to add color and glamour to just about any outfit.
525 America faux fur vest, $229; Krazy Larry textured pants, $129; both from Town & County

3, 4. Maxi Dresses
Chances are good that you already have a maxi dress hanging in your closet. A maxi dress can transform from a casual day at the office to chic lounge wear for a traditional holiday get together. Black maxi dress, $48; A. Muse gold cardigan, $68; Honey Punch black and ivory chevron cardigan, $48; floppy red hat, $44; all from STAXX

5, 6. Day to Night
Take advantage of the season with sequins. You can impress with a sequined dress for an office party by adding a fitted blazer and either a statement necklace or a belt. For evening events, ditch the blazer and rock the sparkle.
SW 3 Sequins dress, $219; black and gold belt, $229; Lisette black blazer, $229; all from Town & County
