With many opting to lean toward muted and toned-down colors, it can feel intimidating to incorporate bright pops of color into a redesign. Owner of DKW Designs Denise Wright jumped at the chance to tackle this project when her client reached out looking for a bright, vibrant look. “I just loved working with this client because she was not afraid at all to use color, which is a rarity,” Wright says. “She was an adventurous client when it came to design and color, and was just such a delight to work with on this project because it is so unique compared to what most people are willing to do in their home, but it definitely paid off.”
Throughout the project Wright maintained a polished and refined look while adding in pops of blue throughout the house. She balanced bold statement pieces, like the blue cabinetry, oven hood and swivel chairs in the kitchen, with subtle pops of color added to complement them, like the Cambria countertops with blue veins and gold flecks running through them.

This pairing of striking and subdued color pieces, along with adding in neutral colors and textures, helped balance the use of color while creating a unique space. “I think we can open magazines and just see all gray walls, all neutral furniture, which is a beautiful look and I’ve done that in many homes,” Wright says. “But sometimes the pops of color here and there are what make something so much more interesting and enjoyable to live in.”
For those looking to incorporate color into their own home, Wright recommends starting with a bold statement wall, using a colorful paint or wallpaper. “Paint is just paint, so if you paint your favorite color on a wall and you get tired of it, it’s just paint and you can repaint it,” she says. “It’s not like you’ve spent thousands and thousands of dollars on it, so that’s an easy change to add color.”
Wright’s biggest tip for using color is to simply use it and not be held back by worries of what’s currently trending in the market. “If it’s your favorite color, you won’t get tired of it,” she says. “I think most people don’t want to stretch themselves outside of their comfort zone because they try to go with what everybody else is doing or what they see the market or trends are. But what makes a home unique is if it truly wraps around your own personality and your own design style, and not necessarily what everybody else is doing.”
